Bruns The fi rst time I discovered Arcadia was about 30 years ago, during a recon patrol on my pedal-assisted cycle (fancy-man talk for moped .) Growing up in the Midwest, I missed the fence-free yards that allowed for huge grass yards with room for organized sports. Arcadia was as close as I’d come to fi nding it. I was hooked, and nearly every Saturday was spent rollin’ through the neighborhood at a 25 mph clip (30 if the wind cooperated), admiring and coveting. I was jealous of the baseball players in the area, who had a seemingly unlimited supply of exploding “baseballs” (oranges) for batting practice via ‘toss-up.’ Fifteen years later, I was working for a book distributor in the area at night while languishing in a technical sales career during the day. I quit both jobs and embarked on a four-month, spirit-refreshing tour of America in my Jeep. I wrote a book during the adventure and decided once I got home, I was going to pursue my writing. A few months later – in early 1998 – I discovered Arcadia had its own newspaper, so I stopped by the business of fi ce with some writing samples. This led to the birth of this column, and a tidy sum of $50 per month, which was 100% more than I had ever been paid for my words before. There were a few ideas knocked around for the name of this column. Greg’s Corner, My Turn and a couple other clichés were shot down. Since I was drinking martinis straight up with a twist of lime during that discussion, well, now you know. Writing about Arcadia and its residents meant I needed to live in the area, so I ditched Tempe and made Arcadia my home. Several months after getting my own column here, I was hired for advertising sales. Then in 2001, I bought the paper when the owners wanted out (newspaper publishing was getting too computerized for their taste). Since then, we’ve made a lot of changes and enhancements to your neighborhood newspaper. We launched a new publication in 2007 ( Arcadia Home ), converted the News to full color in 2008, launched a daily Arcadia news web site in 2010 and a digital/ online version of the printed paper in 2011. Now, many years after those moped tours, my wife and I are raising our children on Calle Redonda.
