Page 24 April 2012 By Christina Sampson In 1954, Arnie and Muriel Cole came to Arizona so Arnie Cole could breathe easier. Having served in World War II and taken a sniper bullet to the chest, the dry air was easier on the one lung Cole had left than the moist air of his Billings, Mont. hometown. After Cole did a brief stint at Bechtel Corporation as a cost engineer, the couple partnered with Bill Clark, owner of Bill Clark’s Fruit Stand, in 1956. Two years later the Coles bought out Clark’s interest and began to operate the business on Thomas Road and 44 th Street. The Coles were laying the foundation for what would one day become Arnie’s Health Food Store, an Arcadia institution. As the decades passed, “the Stand,” as Arnie, Muriel and their three children call it, became part of the fabric of the neighborhood and the Cole family. The children worked there every day, walking to the fruit stand instead of home after school. Cole would get his fruit either locally, from trees growing on Lafayette Road, for instance, or would travel to orchards throughout the country. “I used to get up at 3 or 5 in the morning and fl y to Utah and I’d buy whole orchards,” Cole said. “The main part I’d sell to wholesales stores, but the rest I’d bring here.” In the mid-1960s, Cole added vitamins and organic nuts and other products.
