Page 16 April 2012 their character is someone they can relate to. And perhaps better than either McGregor or Blunt in this movie is their chemistry together, as actors and the characters. True, there are some holes and cliché bits in the plot, but there also are a few twists helping keep the audience interested. One of the nice touches to the movie is Scott Thomas’ sharp-witted character and her interactions with the prime minister as the head of public relations. Just as well, the sheikh’s character greatly improves the movie as he tries to get people to understand his reasoning for wanting to fi sh in the desert. Despite the misleading title, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is an uplifting movie that earns 4 stars from me. Page 17 April 2012 By Heather Gross Project Home, an Arcadia-based interior consulting and design company, has partnered with St. Vincent de Paul thrift stores to create monthly tutorials on repurposing and re fi nishing furniture. The union between Nikki Caprara, the owner and operator of Project Home, and St. Vincent de Paul aims to bene fi t both the charities that St. Vincent de Paul’s services and those looking for designer home goods at a low cost. “Everyone wants to have those pieces that look like they’re from Anthropology but no one can afford them,” Caprara said. Caprara volunteers time to St. Vincent de Paul to do a monthly tutorial on how to repurpose and re fi nish one piece that was found at a St. Vincent de Paul thrift store. The tutorial is put on Caprara’s blog with step-by-step photos. Caprara’s fi nished product is then sold in one of the thrift stores. All the pro fi ts from Caprara’s items will fund St. Vincent de Paul’s programs for the homeless and working poor, said Mary Chou-Thompson of St. Vincent de Paul. “We hope that this partnership with Nikki will give shoppers new and creative ideas for thrift store items,” Chou- Thompson said. Project Home, which Caprara started about a year ago, is a business she runs from her home. Caprara offers interior design consulting for people looking for cheap ways to spruce up their homes, and she also sells pieces she has designed. The idea behind Project Home is that anyone can make their house look stylish on a budget. “This is something that someone who has no design background can do,” Caprara said. “All it takes is a little elbow grease and some spray paint and sand paper.” What Caprara does while working for Project Home depends entirely on each individual client.
