Page 10 April 2012 Some relief available for allergies By Jackie Doris, M.D. Our immune system is designed to protect our body from getting sick by getting rid of harmful bacteria and viruses, essentially fl ushing them out of our systems through watery eyes, sneezing and coughing. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you may have the same reaction when the pollen count is high during the spring. If your body has an oversensitive immune response, then your body thinks the pollen is harmful to your body. You feel miserable, but your immune system is only trying to help. Allergy season runs from about February to May or June in Phoenix. Once the heat hits with days of 100 degrees or higher, most pollen problems disappear. In the meantime, we’re seeing patients complaining about sneezing and itchy, watery eyes. About 50 million Americans suffer from allergies, but sometimes it’s hard to differentiate between allergies and a cold. A cold typically will be accompanied by a fever plus aches and pains and go away after about a week. Allergies appear at about the same time every year, as a response to a particular exposure, and don’t go away – without help – until the trigger goes away. Most people ride out seasonal allergies with over-the-counter antihistamines. Start with a non-drowsy antihistamine. Your reaction to an antihistamine may vary, so if one doesn’t work, try another. Your physician also can help with a topical nasal steroid spray that is anti- in fl ammatory and can reduce symptoms. Some people need additional help with prescription antihistamines or allergy testing for shots to reduce the reaction. Pollen, dust and mold are common triggers. And you may not have a reaction to one, but when the pollen counts are higher, it’s enough additional exposure to cause problems. Unfortunately, when the weather is the nicest, the pollen counts are the highest. To avoid exposure, keep your doors and windows shut and avoid outside activity, especially in the morning and evening and on windy days. Check the pollen counts at pollen.com for your ZIP code for guidance. You also can help reduce your exposure by changing your air fi lters and keeping your house as free as possible of dust and mold. Pets bring pollen indoors so keep them out of the bedroom and consider wiping them down when they come inside the house. Saline solution and steam inhalation can be soothing for allergy sufferers. If over-the-counter relief isn’t enough, see your physician. You don’t have to be miserable all spring. Jackie Doris, M.D., is a family practice physician at Arcadia Family Clinic.
