Page 6 March 2012 Horror fi lm fails to be very scary The Woman in Black Director: James Watkins Actors: Daniel Radcliffe, Ciarán Hinds and Janet McTeer Missing the mark as far as horror fi lms go, The Woman in Black needs to be taught there is more than one way to scare an audience. The movie was based on the book of the same name by Susan Hill and adapted into a stage play before two movies were made. In the latest adaptation, lawyer and widow Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe) is sent to a small village to take care of the paperwork needed to sell an old estate that none of the villagers want to even think about. Though the work is only supposed to take a couple of days, Kipps fi nds himself in the middle of something much bigger as he begins seeing the malicious ghost of the woman who lived in the estate. With the children in the village dropping like fl ies, willingly causing their own deaths because of this mysterious ghost, Kipps tries to discover the truth and put the vengeful spirit to rest with the help of local man Mr. Daily (Hinds) and his supposedly insane wife (McTeer). Most horror movies can be put into one of three categories: They can be all scares and only a basic story; they can have an in-depth story; or they can have a mixture of both. The Woman in Black de fi nitely falls into the fi rst. Even though they seem to go deep, the story is predictable to the point of being boring in certain parts. The only surprise in the story comes toward the end and, avoiding spoilers, all there is to say is it could be disputed whether or not it was a good surprise. And though the obvious response to a ghost, other than calling Ghostbusters, is to try to put it to rest, is there any going back once it starts making children commit suicide?
