Page 30 March 2012 The Scottsdale School District Foundation is seeking sponsors from both individuals and businesses for its annual fundraising event Quest for Excellence Golf Tournament. The golf tournament funds the Foundation’s Quest For Excellence Mini- Grant program, which, according to Mary Manross, former Scottsdale Mayor and current chair of the SUSD Foundation Board of Directors, has been a “smashing success.” “These grants allow teachers to apply and receive funding for highly innovative, non-textbook learning experiences,” Manross said. “This means funds are used where they provide the greatest impact directly in the classroom.” The event will begin at 1:30 p.m. April 24 at the Grayhawk Golf Club. Donations of items for the raf fl e and live auction also are needed. For more information, email quest4excellence@susdfoundation.org. Expect More Arizona has and hopes to expand upon the opportunities for students. “At Camelback it’s a program, but really it’s a mindset,” Gestson said. “It’s the idea that success must be mandatory for kids.” Gestson works on programs similar to Expect More Arizona. Programs include: mentor systems for students; four-plus-four plans, in which students set up goals for their time in high school, plus the four years after they graduate; and events aimed to give attention to all students, whether they are highly successful in their education or struggling to get by. Camelback High School also aims to involve parents in education. By educating parents on the challenges and solutions the education system has, Gestson said students will be more successful. “A lot of the time it’s not a lack of involvement or a lack of concern, it’s a lack of awareness,” Gestson said. Esau said Expect More Arizona is important not only for students and future students, but for Arizona as a whole. “It (having students succeed) ultimately contributes to our overall quality of life and the quality of our economy,” Esau said. Expect More Arizona tracks its progress by the measureable number of people following the movement. Currently, it has around 12,000 people who actively follow the newsletter, Twitter page or Facebook page. Expect More Arizona hopes to engage 1 million followers by 2016.
