Page 24 March 2012 International customs require some adjustment By Kaley Kalil Travel is the absolute best way to experience how people live in other parts of the world. Visitors have the opportunity to submerge themselves in another culture’s daily routine, to really live like a local. This sometimes challenging, yet rewarding experience often means going out of one’s comfort zone to try new things. There are so many exciting new and seemingly odd cultural norms a traveler will discover when gallivanting around the globe, it’s hard to remember them all. Here are a few of the most noticeable customs I’ve experienced throughout the world. Kissing one’s cheek The warm (and sometimes arduous) greeting of cheek kissing is widespread throughout much of Europe, the Middle East and Latin America. Depending upon where you are, it may be customary to kiss cheeks one to three times, on alternate cheeks or on the same cheek. Weddings can be exhausting. Respect, formality and shoes A huge aspect of many Asian cultures is the importance of respect for one’s elders. In South Korea, it is important to hold your glass with two hands when an elder fi lls it up for you, and to hold the bottle with two hands when fi lling up your elder’s glass. Always re fi ll someone’s glass if you see it’s empty, and don’t start drinking or eating until the eldest person at the table has begun to do so. In both Korea and Japan, shoes should be removed when entering a house and swapped for house slippers found at the front door. It is also customary to remove your shoes when entering a restaurant where patrons sit on cushions on the fl oor. This is why many Koreans wear socks when they go out, whether the accompanying shoe is a high heel or a sneaker. Spain’s siesta Most shops and businesses throughout Spain close between 2 to 5 p.m. for siesta, while bars and restaurants take their siesta from 4 to 7 p.m. Siesta allows people to take a break from the workday to enjoy a leisurely two-hour lunch or dinner and a nap afterward. Siesta is great for those days when you feel like you’ve run out of energy mid-afternoon. It’s not so great when you want to fi t in some shopping after class. In the near future, they hope to visit New Orleans, St. Louis and Kansas City. They will be visiting Austin, Texas this month. Future international travels to Greenland, Scotland and Ireland are at the top of their list. Their daughter Alycia lives in Seattle and their son Zach currently is attending Scottsdale Community College. “The McKenzie family has traveled to almost every state west of the Mississippi River,” Myron said. They have also traveled to England, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Canada. Additionally, Myron has traveled extensively through his work to Mexico, Europe, New Zealand, and Antarctica, as well as throughout the U.S. “There are so many wonderful places to go and see in this country,” Myron said. “Everybody needs to be a little more adventurous and go see new places instead of going to the same place year after year.” Kaley Kalil is a 25-year-old traveler from Arcadia who has lived in and traveled to roughly 30 countries.
