Page 10 March 2012 This month’s report from Justice Steven Sarkis There is little doubt working within the fi eld of law enforcement is dangerous. Locally and throughout Maricopa County, we see, hear and read about the dangers involved in law enforcement nearly every day. From simple traf fi c stops to dangerous drug busts, law enforcement of fi cers put their lives on the line daily to keep the rest of us safe. Working within the court system, I also have come to realize just how much our security of fi cers do to keep both employees and the public safe. About once each month, court security shuts down our courthouse for one reason or another, prohibiting anyone from entering or exiting the facility. More often than not, it is simply a safety precaution. On occasion, people accidently bring in something that could be considered a weapon. These people usually are embarrassed and apologetic. However, on rare occasions, such as when a person attempts to bring a gun into the courthouse, one wonders what their intentions might have been. Anyone’s guess. Attempting to tabulate how much safer our law enforcement of fi cers have kept our communities during the past year, or past decade for that matter, is an impossible task. Suf fi ce it to say they deserve, yet receive little, recognition. I do know, however, that based upon our annual Court Security Report for 2011 nationally, among the millions of people screened throughout the various court facilities, court security con fi scated 79,657 prohibited items, 34,691 knives/ edged weapons and one fi rearm. That being said, the next time you see a law enforcement of fi cer on the streets or pass through a security line at the airport or courthouse, remember to give thanks to those that protect our well-being on a daily basis. Remember these people, with little to no recognition, have made a career out of keeping the rest of us safe. Steven Sarkis is the justice of the peace for the Arcadia Biltmore Justice Court.
