Page 8 February 2012 Dr. John Woellner Don’t ignore symptoms of heart attack By John Woellner, M.D. Most heart attacks are not the dramatic clutching of the chest we see in movies. Instead, the common symptoms are the following: • Chest discomfort that lasts longer than a few minutes or goes away and comes back. It ranges from an uncomfortable pressure to squeezing to sharp pain. • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the jaw, back or stomach. • Shortness of breath . • Breaking out in a cold sweat , nausea, vomiting or lightheadedness. The most common symptom for men and women is chest pain, but women are more likely than men to experience the less common symptoms and to experience milder initial symptoms. Both men and women, unfortunately, often dismiss the initial symptoms as well, thus the saying that denial is the fi rst sign of a heart attack. Quick intervention by calling 9-1-1 will save your life. Heart attacks kill six times more women than breast cancer, and, according to the American Heart Association, for those younger than 50, heart attacks are twice as fatal in women than in men. Eighty percent of women between the ages of 40 and 60 have at least one of the risk factors for heart disease, according to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. When a heart attack happens, the blood fl ow to part of the heart is blocked. This kills part of the heart muscle supplied by that artery. Treatment opens the blocked artery to restore blood fl ow. The quicker the treatment, the less damage to the heart and the better the outcome will be for the patient.
