The event will showcase nearly 30 acts comprised of 300 students keeping to this year’s theme “12 Months of Hopi,” celebrating the lives and activities of Hopi Hawks. “It’s a fun show and a great opportunity for the Arcadia community to come together and highlight the children of Hopi,” show director Josh Woodward said. He and his wife Michele, like many involved in the community tradition, have roots and history with the show. They began their involvement six years ago when they were putting an act together for one of their children. This year the couple has taken on the show’s biggest role and joined the ranks of such show directors as Sheryl Cooper, Alice Cooper’s wife. “It’s really just a labor of love and we were fortunate enough to be asked to run it,” Josh Woodward said. “We’re just having a blast this year.” The Hopi Elementary School variety show started in the early 1970s. The production gained more attention in the ‘90s when the Coopers were involved and has slowly grown into the large production it is today, Michele Woodward said. In recent years the variety show has taken on different themes. Page 19 February 2012 Arcadia High School wins University Cup from UofA By Domenico Nicosia The annual University Cup was awarded to Arcadia High School for the 2011-2012 academic year. In 1929, the University of Arizona in Tucson established the award to recognize high schools who have taught successful students attending the university. The award is based on the highest average GPA of current UA freshman that graduated from Arizona high schools, including all public and private schools. Schools are either eligible for the President’s Cup, University Cup or Arizona Cup based on the number of freshman at the UA. Arcadia alums had a grade point average of 3.339. “This award speaks to the college preparedness of the freshman,” said Judi Paffenbarger, Arcadia High School college and career center adviser. Paffenbarger credited some of this success to the many AP and dual enrollment courses AHS offers. The school also hosts workshops geared towards preparing students for college applications. Seminars focus on topics including essay writing. The school is visited by recruiters from more than 60 colleges. After a high school has been selected for the University Cup, students then nominate the most impactful staff member for Counselor of the Year and Teacher of the Year awards. Counselor Francine Aiello and teacher Bryce McKinney-Wain were selected this year. McKinney-Wain has been an Arcadia High School teacher since 1984 and currently teaches newspaper and yearbook courses. She said her most in fl uential lessons as those about life through literature. “I prefer the classics, but Gatsby is my favorite book,” McKinney-Wain said. “It’s tempting them to ful fi ll their dreams.” The UA award is “quite an honor, but it is all about the great students we have here,” McKinney-Wain said. a a l Garden • Arcadia High • Peo op p p p s o o • St. Theresa • Basketball • Ki id d ds i se e eu ums • Softball • Shemer Art • Ch hr r ri r Vo o o ol lleyball • Neighborhood News • Sp po o or N te e e er rtainment • Ingleside • Football • N N N a en n n nt ts • Squaw Peak • Recreation • Dram m m ma a d Da a an nce • Church News • Hopi • Arc ca a a n l lt t th & Fitness • Arts & Entertainme e en n a s s • Hopi • Football • Desert Botani ic c c ca S a ad d d dia High • People • Phoenix Zoo • S S le • Ph a as s sketball • Kids • Tavan • Museums s • Tav h h er A l w w w Peak • Recreation • Drama • Baseb ba a a hu u ur rch News • H i Follow the Titans.
