Page 12 February 2012 Loud & Clear falls short of heartstrings Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close Director: Stephen Daldry Actors: Thomas Horn, Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock and Max von Sydow Despite its obvious goal of drowning its audience members in their own tears, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close falls short instead earns snif fl ing at best. Based on the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer, 11-year old Oskar Schell (Horn) is dealing with the death of his father (Hanks) in the World Trade Center attack of 9/11. A year later Oskar still can’t accept what’s happened and has detached himself from his mother (Bullock). Desperately clinging to the memories of his father, he starts on an adventure searching for the lock that belongs to a key he found in his father’s closet. Along the way he recruits the strange elderly man (von Sydow) renting one of his grandmother’s rooms. As the search continues, he starts to see the world in a different light and come to terms with loss. Extremely Loud tries too hard to bring tears and loses some of the better parts of the story in the process. The fi rst half of the movie is overrun with too many fl ashbacks of 9/11, which slows the process of the set-up for the rest of the movie. In turn, it seems that the rest of the story speeds up to the point where there seems to be no break in the emotionally intense scenes. It feels as though as soon as one character fi nally stops crying, two more start for a different reason. While there are one or two rare moments that actually deserve a few tears, most seem forced and drawn out. It would have been more touching to see more of the people Oskar met along the way and hear about some sweet memories from the many he met. Different approach, just as many tears. The parts with the Renter are without a doubt the best of the movie, but there are too few.
