Page 4 January 2012 By Dale Messmer Was Santa good to you? It was a musical holiday for me. The piercing guitars jolting my neighbors into 2012 mean they’re a little more interested in closing their doors for the summer, I’m sure. Also received a new stereo for my aging car. Probably because my wife would rather I crank up those vintage guitar solos outside out of her hearing. She’s a Neil Diamond girl. Far different musical tastes than mine. It’s ironic that family and friends found fi ne tunes for me after last month’s column about Christmas music. (By the way, I was tired of it far before the tree went up, no matter what I wrote in December). After all, how many times can you listen to Frosty the Snowman when there’s no snow to make a man? So now I can further endanger damage to my hearing from the comfort of my car. There are few better pleasures in life than cruising in your car to the magic of music. No one to tell you to turn down the sound. No one to ask for something they’d rather hear. Guess it’s my ultimate guilty pleasure. So while tooling through the neighborhood (making sure the windows were up so the elderly among us would not suffer heart attacks or give me dirty looks) it made me think about what might be playing in the homes and on the iPods of Arcadia. I enjoy talking with teens about what’s blasting in their earbuds, but what about the adults? And are you considered an adult if your headphones hammer out Cream and Jeff Beck? I hope I’m never considered an adult. Yet while I take music so seriously, there are many more truly serious things going on around us. Christia Gibbons takes a look at one such situation on page 13 with a sensational story about Ryan House. If you read only one story in this issue, that should be it. But please read more than one. Quite immodestly, I think this may be the best content we’ve offered the neighborhood since I took over as editor. Too many good stories to talk about here. You’ll just have to take my word for it and read them all. Which brings me to my monthly opportunity to thank you for being a part of the Arcadia News . My readers are just as important to me as my iPod. I can’t live without either.
