The store had a variety of owners through the years. Nathan Mears, a fi ne wine representative who has worked for Sportsman’s for a number of years, said one owner, Rob Burns, revamped properties for sale. He began the transition to cigars instead of cigarettes and fi ne wine instead of fi shing licenses. He ditched the drive-thru, Mears said, and readied the store to sell. Elliot Fine bought the store in 1987. Kimber Stonehouse, a manager at Sportsman’s for the last eight years, said one of Fine’s goals was to help out wineries of his choosing such as Beaulieu and Robert Mondavi. Today, Sportsman’s carries more than 150 single malt scotches, and Malt Advocate calls the store’s selections one of the best in the country. Thirteen years ago, the store added a café. “The café is what separates Sportsman’s from the ‘big box’ liquor stores,” Stonehouse said. “The most outstanding part about our café is the wine-by-the- glass selection.” There are 75 wines ranging from $5 to $20 by the glass on the list at any one time. with the complete list changing every quarter.
