Page 28 January 2012 South Mountain hike aims to raise money for cancer By Jennifer Crane Half of all men and a third of all women in the U.S. will develop cancer at some point in their lives. The American Cancer Society is working toward preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. It hosts events throughout the year at Valley locations to raise awareness for the cause. In February, the society is putting on its annual Climb to Conquer Cancer at South Mountain. This regional event is a 5-mile hike with a festival at the top and bottom. Molly Fuzat is a lifelong Arcadia resident participating for the fi rst time. She, like most people, has known people who had cancer. “I have had several family members affected by breast, colon and skin cancer,” she said. “I am thankful that they have all won their respective battles, but I know friends or family members who have known others that have not been so fortunate.” In college at Northern Arizona University, Fuzat was a member of Delta Delta Delta, whose national philanthropy is St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. That was when she discovered her passion for cancer research. “It helped me realize how much I could help on an individual level in joining the fi ght against cancer,” she said. The Climb to Conquer Cancer is taking place at 7 a.m. Feb. 25 at South Mountain Park. There is a $40 registration fee and the opportunity to raise money. “People don’t realize the potential they have to make a difference in this fi ght. Every little bit helps,” Fuzat said. The Climb to Conquer Cancer brings in money that stays in Arizona instead of going to the national cause. “You never know when the work of ACS could help save your own life down the line,” Fuzat said. Page 29 January 2012 Cindie Hubiak and Steve Frohman Husband-wife team assists prostate-cancer couples By Jennifer Crane A Scottsdale couple came through their experience with prostate cancer with a dream of helping other couples cope with the struggles that arise during the treatment. Steve Frohman was diagnosed with prostate cancer in May 2007. After having surgery, he has been cancer free. Last year Frohman and his wife, Cindie Hubiak, created Solutions for Intimacy, a Scottsdale-based company geared toward helping couples lead an intimate and sexually ful fi lled life after prostate cancer. “Many men and women impacted by prostate cancer haven’t fully grieved,” Hubiak said. “We grieve anytime something changes. One of the things we like to work with is grief.
