Page 24 January 2012 Neighbor Continued from page 18 He was also senior fi eld sales manager at Vector Marketing Corporation, and his hard work and will to succeed earned him fi ve-star international trips. In March, Dominic traveled to Ireland along with hundreds of other sales managers from throughout the United States and Canada, a destination that had long been at the top of his list. “When he was about 10 years old, Dommy asked me if he would be more Irish when he got older,” Dominic’s mom, Maureen Ameche, said. “When I took him to the airport for this trip, I told him, ‘When you land, you’re going to know where you came from. You’re an Irishman.’ ” Dominic’s Irish expedition began in Shannon with a caravan across the grazing lands of County Clare, out to the west coast and the Cliffs of Moher. They continued north along the coast to Galway where Dominic took a keen liking to cobblestone streets and graceful, old churches. But, it was Dublin that really made Dominic grin from ear to ear. He fell in love with the Irish pubs, restaurants, historic sites and Celtic heritage just waiting to be discovered and enjoyed. “He knew the layout of Dublin within the fi rst 12 hours of being there,” Jason said. “Dublin was his favorite part of the whole trip. He knew how to get around that city faster than any of us.” Dominic made himself at home on one of the busiest shopping streets in the world – Grafton Street – alongside street performers, musicians, poets, mime artists, locals and other giddy tourists. Often, this annual burst of resolve comes after the deliciously gluttonous holiday season has wreaked havoc on any weight loss or any control that’s been obtained. But it doesn’t have to be that, said Dr. Ben Bocchicchio, a fi tness and health expert who will host a free educational seminar Jan. 7 at Doctor’s Fitness Center. The seminar, which also will feature Dr. Helen Hilts, a family practitioner, will teach attendees how to get healthier by altering their metabolism using exercise and diet. Education and awareness are key, he said. Especially when caught in social eating situations. “When you’re by yourself, be good, but when you’re being social, be social,” he said. “Just don’t eat like you’re going to the electric chair.” And, Bocchicchio said, it’s important to be aware of the consequences of one’s choices. “Know what these foods are going to do to you,” Bocchicchio said. “Don’t let this be some big surprise. “Understand that (weight gain) is going to happen, but it doesn’t mean you abandon the ship. “If you start the day eating like crazy, then okay, but end it eating well.” Bocchicchio has worked as a fi tness consultant for a number of professional athletic teams and organizations, including the U.S. Olympic Committee and the National Football League. He said he became interested in the health effects of obesity and fat about a decade into his 40-year career. He went on to earn a second doctorate in health services, specializing in exercise, and then completed a post- doctoral program at Columbia University focusing on body composition and weight management. The Jan. 7 seminar will focus on educating participants about maintaining metabolic health. It will include his Slow Maximum Resistance Training (SMaRT) system that includes ef fi cient exercise. “Walk on the treadmill (and) do one minutes intervals at a high grade - when you’re huf fi ng and puf fi ng - and you’ll get the same response and more bene fi ts than you would being on the treadmill for an hour,” Bocchicchio said. “I want to disrupt your lifestyle as little as possible with maximum effects,” he said. He is especially looking forward to working with Hilts, who he said is very passionate about providing care to the underserved. The seminar will be 10 a.m. to noon at Doctor’s Fitness Center, 2394 E. Camelback Road. The building is behind Wells Fargo at 24 th Street and Camelback Road. Attendance is free and the fi rst 50 attendees will receive Bocchicchio’s Metabolic Makeover DVD. Seating is limited. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 480- 206-5017 or via e-mail drben@drbenbo. com.
