Page 16 January 2012 Even Watson would fi nd fi lm’s fl aws Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Director: Guy Ritchie Actors: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Stephen Fry, and Jared Harris In this second installment in the new Sherlock Holmes movies, Sherlock (Downey Jr.) looks into a series of bombings thought to be the work of anarchists. While Watson (Law) wants out of this investigation as he’s about to be married, Sherlock isn’t willing to let him get off that easy and manages to drag him back into the game. Going along for the ride is Mycroft Holmes (Fry), Sherlock’s successful brother. Leading the opposing team is Professor James Moriarty (Harris), a mad genius and rival of Sherlock’s. The story in this sequel involved too much politics and history, and this dated the movie and overcomplicated things. There were some humorous moments, just enough to take a breath from all the action. Speaking of which, the fi ght scenes were good, but they often drew out longer than necessary. This movie lives up to the expectations that other Robert Downey Jr. movies have set. It’s an action fi lm full of fi st fi ghts, shooting and, of course, explosions. Just don’t go expecting a Sherlock Holmes movie. While I’m all for putting a new spin on older stories to get the modern audience interested, there is a thin line between a different take on an older story and something completely different with some elements inspired by an older story. This movie, as well as the fi rst in the series, crossed the line. Now, that doesn’t make it a bad movie. It just makes it a bad Sherlock Holmes movie. It’s much more enjoyable as an action fi lm alone. Continued on page 23 If you want to simplify your insurance...
