Page 12 January 2012 New name, other changes coming to Channel Eight By Christina Sampson Viewers of Channel Eight Create - a member channel of the Public Broadcasting Station (PBS) - will be seeing new and improved programming beginning New Year’s Day when the channel becomes home to Eight Life . The channel’s changes will include a mix of new and old programming. In response to viewer emails and phone calls, Woodsmith Shop will be added to the programming lineup. For Linda Pucci, an Arcadia resident who is a longtime viewer of the channel, this will be an especially welcome addition. “I kind of miss Woodsmith Shop ; I used to watch it with my grandpa,” Pucci said. “I’ve always been fascinated with people who can do stuff with their hands.” “I’ve been watching (PBS) a long time,” Pucci, a retired elementary school principal, said. As a teacher during the 1960s, Pucci would use the educational show The Electric Company as a teaching tool. Like many other Channel Eight viewers, she never stopped watching. “My kids grew up watching Sesame Street, and now my grandkids watch it,” Pucci said. New genres, such as fi tness, also will be added to the new format. Regina Guinn, an active volunteer from Arcadia, said she also is excited about the new programming in store. “That’s exciting,” Guinn said. “I don’t have cable, and I don’t think I really want cable. “(On PBS) there’s always something to watch, and it’s not some stupid reality show. “It’s always on in my house,” she added. “It’s like eating a healthy food instead of Cheetos all day.” Guinn especially said she enjoys Victory Garden and the travel shows. “All the travel shows are just great, and with four kids, and two in college, it’s great to travel vicariously,” Guinn said. Guinn will be especially pleased that the channel still will be home to travel experts Rick Steves and Rudy Maxa. Guinn also volunteers for the station and has done volunteer work there with her daughters as well. “You meet some great people, and the work’s not that hard,” Guinn said of being a pledge drive volunteer. “All you do is answer the phone and take money from people.” Her daughters have donned costumes as Curious George and the Cat in the Hat for Continued on page 21 Cell: () - • Office: () -  E. Page 13 January 2012 Joy and help fi ll space at Ryan House By Christia Gibbons This is what joy looks like: Karrie and Jim Pierson’s dancing eyes when they talk of their 11-year-old daughter Caroline whose brain stopped growing when Karrie was 20 weeks pregnant. Their proud hearts when they speak of children Cat, 15, who goes to Xavier College Preparatory and 13-year-old Joe who attends St. Thomas, and who both love their little sister who can’t walk or talk and needs to be fed through a tube. “We’ve rallied around it. We’ve accepted it,” Karrie said. Joy is their devotion to Ryan House, the place where they both give and get respite from an unanticipated, but rewarding life. It happened twice. A still-undiagnosed genetic condition took the life of daughter Anna a month shy of her 5 th birthday in 2009, and has given Caroline the life she leads today. The Arcadia family “was pulled to Ryan House” after Anna was given hospice care and met Dr. Tressia Shaw, Karrie said. “She looked at me and spoke with such Continued on page 40 Karrie (left) and Jim (far left kissing his daughter Caroline) Pierson are devoted to Ryan House and helping other families facing the dif fi culties they live with raising Caroline, whose brain stopped growing when Karrie was 20 weeks pregnant.
