The thyroid produces the hormone that sets your metabolism and affects several organ systems in your body. About 60 million people, or 5 percent of the U.S. population, are affected by thyroid disease. Women are more likely to be affected than men, and those older than 60 are at greater risk. Most people have an underactive thyroid condition, called hypothyroidism, meaning too little of the proper hormone is produced. January is National Thyroid Awareness Month, ironically a time when many vow to lose weight for the New Year. An undiagnosed thyroid condition can make it dif fi cult to lose weight. Hypothyroidism causes the body to use energy more slowly and results in symptoms of fatigue and weight gain, cold intolerance, and joint and muscle pain. Other symptoms include constipation, dry skin, thinning hair, depression, impaired fertility and a slowed heart rate. An undiagnosed thyroid condition can underlie many other problems, making those dif fi cult to treat. But many of the symptoms of hypothyroidism can be caused by a variety of problems. It’s important to treat the whole person and look at all the symptoms for the best outcome rather than rush to a diagnosis. Physicians start with a history looking for thyroid disorder and immune disorders in the patient and their family members. Some medications can cause the thyroid gland to work improperly, and radiation exposure to the neck also can damage the thyroid gland.
