Page 6 December 2011 Dr. James Doris Safe holiday is possible with care By James F. Doris, M.D. The holidays – the most wonderful time of the year – actually are pretty dangerous. In the midst of the all the fun, people are injured by falls and risk their health with stress, travel, exposure to germs and hazardous holiday decorations. Most accidents happen when we step outside our normal routine, which describes the entire month of December. Stay safe and well so you and your family can enjoy the holidays. Stay Well: The best way to avoid getting sick is frequently washing your hands and avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth with your hands. Avoid contact with anyone who is sick. Sleep well and eat well – beyond the holiday treats – so that your body can fi ght off all the extra germs you are exposed to in holiday crowds at the mall and events. Climb Safely: According to the Centers for Disease Control, the most likely time for someone who is 49 years or younger to be injured by a fall is during the holidays. The majority of falls occur from a ladder while hanging holiday lights Make sure your ladder is secure and level. Keep the area around the ladder clear. Extend the ladder at least three feet above the edge of the roof and stand centered on the ladder. Do not stand on the top two rungs of the ladder Watch Children: Every year, children come to the emergency room after drinking alcohol – the party wasn’t cleaned up the night before – or swallowing a jingle bell or after going through grandma’s purse and mistaking medication for candy Just a small amount of alcohol or a heart pill can be toxic to a child. Not everyone takes the precautions you do when you have small children at home. Continued on page 30 The Lindstrom Family and Michael & Sandy Martin would like to thank all our loyal customers.
