By Max McCauley On the morning of Veteran’s Day 2011, 14 boys and many parents from Boy Scout Troop 6 held a serious ceremony at Hallman Park in Tempe to retire U.S. and Arizona fl ags More than 150 old, worn, faded and tattered fl ags were collected from the VFW and the City of Tempe. According to the U.S. Flag Code, “ The fl ag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fi tting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a digni fi ed way, preferably by burning.” The fl ag retirement ceremony took quite a while because, after a short presentation, each fl ag was carefully placed on the fi re one at a time. Most of the fl ags were made of oil-based chemicals which created a great deal of black smoke and a big and a very hot fi re . Page 33 December 2011 Youth studies Pearl Harbor Carson Herding’s fascination with Pearl Harbor started with listening to his father read him a book. By Jennifer Crane An Arcadia family took an opportunity to further their son’s interest in Pearl Harbor and the military by going on vacation to Hawaii this spring to visit the historic site. Six-year-old Carson Herding’s interest in Pearl Harbor began when his dad read him a book called A Boy at War by Harry Mazer as a bedtime story. The book is about a 14-year-old boy who witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor and becomes a hero. “Most kids get interested in something and move on to something else,” said Carson’s mom, Keri. “He’s been on this for two or three years now.” Carson knows more about World War II and Pearl Harbor than many, and can spout off facts about the ships, planes and casualties that took place on Dec. 7, 1941. “I’ve learned more about the war than I ever thought I would,” Keri said.
