Page 28 December 2011 Based on a circle, the house featured a winding ramp that led to the roof. When Wright visited Scottsdale in the 1930s, his organic architecture met the rugged beauty of the Sonoran desert. The result was Taliesen West, a series of buildings that evolve and blend with the environment, said Mindi Carr, public relations manager for the art museum. “Daylighting,” Wright’s use of diffused light, is in evidence in the drawing room at Taliesen West, Ballinger said. “The canvas roof let in natural light Wright Continued from page 23 during the winter months and made people more comfortable,” he said. “These concepts convert today for sustaining mental health.” Taliesen West, the David Wright house and the SC Johnson Administration Building in Racine, Wis. are among more than 40 Wright projects in the exhibit. Rare drawings, scale models, fi lm and photographs round out the show. “He built more buildings than any other architect of the 20 th century,” Ballinger said. “His impact and presence can be felt throughout the Valley.” The exhibit runs Dec. 18 through April 29 in the museum’s Steele Gallery. Page 29 December 2011 From the pivot of the seats to the ability to work out from a wheelchair, the equipment is customizable. “You don’t see that in your average fi tness center,” Pangrazio said. “They really meet the needs of both, and I think that’s a good feature.” Although the aquatics program has yet to launch, the center’s main pool features a dry ramp system which allows swimmers to transfer themselves from a wheelchair to the pool without needing to use steps or assistance. An alternate option for pool access is a stainless steel platform elevator or chair lift. In addition to an aquatics program, volleyball, basketball and rugby are among sports the center can accommodate. “It’s going to be a lot of fun practicing here,” said Robert Reed, Banner Wheelchair Suns team member. “There is a lot of stuff we can use that we wouldn’t normally have.” Reed, who is in his fi fth year with the team, said everyone’s home court is different and he looks forward to hosting other teams at the center this season. The center’s staff plans to purchase spare equipment, including sports chairs, to accommodate all members wanting to participate on a sports team that requires one, Pangrazio said. Piper Continued from page 26 “(Equipment) is a big barrier for participation,” he said. “It’s not cheap, and insurance doesn’t pay for them.” Besides two full-size sports courts and the fi tness center, the indoor track and rock climbing wall also offer members a variety of options for personal fi tness and recreation. “The biggest thing that will happen in the next three months is the programs and the classes. They’re all coming online,” Worthington said. “We have a number of teams, we’ll start setting up more recreational leagues.” The center is hosting its fi rst U.S. Marine Corps Warrior Camp event Dec. 4 and the Banner Wheelchair Suns will play their fi rst home game after the new year. The center will also become accredited for U.S. Paralympic Games qualifying tournaments. “We want anybody who is curious to come down and take a tour,” Pangrazio said. “If you’re interested in learning more about the center, come pay us a visit, de fi nitely.” Adult membership is $35 per month, or $5 per visit. Anyone with any type of disability is eligible for membership, and the center has various scholarship opportunities available as well, Pangrazio said. The center, which opened in October, is located with 11 other service organizations, 10 of which are nonpro fi t, at 5025 E.
