The shop is full of one-of-a-kind objects, and Williams said she likes the decorating challenge. She draws some of her ideas from Romantic Home and Traditional Home magazines. Jenny Stroup, another store volunteer, has been involved with the Boys & Girls Club for more than 30 years, at a time when the thrift store was a rummage sale fundraiser. She said she has seen the project grow from its initial state to a small shop on 70 th Street and Osborn to the current location at 2626 N. Scottsdale Road. Some thrift-store volunteers are Boys & Girls Club members. But beginning next year, the shop will have an internship program. The 10- week, 100-hour long program will include teaching 14- to 16-year-old club members how to run the store. Interns will do research on eBay, work the register, understand gross margin, and learn the art of design under Williams. Olga Fernandez, the 2011 Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year award winner, has donated her time at the thrift shop for more than three years. On a recent Monday morning, two customers were looking at the wall decorations and exchanging recipes. “We are the best kept secret,” said store manager Kathleen Smith. The shop relies on donations and objects acquired at estate sales. It also sells over the Internet on Craigslist and through eBay by the name Uniqueboutique1 . Holidays are exciting for the store. The day after Thanksgiving, the shop started showing off Christmas decorations. Staff likens it to how Macy’s would cover the store windows with brown paper in anticipation of the Christmas season’s window decorations. “We have Christmas from the ‘30s up,” Smith said. “It’s Christmas like you grew up.” Williams’ decoration duties do not stop with the thrift store. As an auxiliary member of the Boys and Girls Club, she is a decorator for club fundraising events. She has been involved with the club’s Visions of Sugarplums event for three years and designed a “pretty in pink” display this year for the silent auction section at the November event. Williams, who has two daughters, said decorating for the holidays is one of her favorite things to do. Page 23 December 2011 Library exhibit features work of Frank Lloyd Wright By Mamie Limerick The Phoenix Art Museum presents Frank Lloyd Wright: Organic Architecture for the 21 st Century starting this month. The exhibit celebrates the 75 th anniversary of Taliesen West, Wright’s winter home and architectural school “He was the greatest architect of the 20 th century,” said James Ballinger, the Sybil Harrington director at the museum. “Here was an architect with a career of 66 years who early on was doing things intuitively.” Wright created a concept of organic architecture, which meant designing buildings of a time, for a place, and for speci fi c people, Ballinger said. Organic architecture incorporated concepts of energy, materials, site, climate, space ef fi ciency, pre-fabricated technology, transportation and urban planning. “Our goal with this exhibit is to encourage thinking about how we will revisit the master plan for Phoenix,” Ballinger said. “Here we knock down an area and put in a road. Wright’s idea called for one big plan.” The architect’s fl uid plan for a decentralized city, Broadacre City, will be on display in a 15-foot square replica, Ballinger said. Broadacre City was conceived at the height of the Great Depression, according to author Anthony Alofsin. It was a democratic city integrating form with nature, served by technology. This city had a low population density centered around individuality and family life. The David Wright house at 56 th Street and Camelback Road in Arcadia typi fi es Wright’s family values. Built in the 1950s for Wright’s son David, the house was called, “How to Live in the Southwest,” said Bruce Pfeiffer, archivist for Taliesen West. Built of concrete blocks from David Wright’s company, the house was elevated from the hot desert fl oor on a spacious lot. It overlooked a grove of citrus trees, which served as a lawn, making a shady retreat in the Arizona heat. Continued on page 28 I’m Margo. I’m a two-year-old Chi-Weenie mix. This is me in the picture with my friend, Kelly. (I’m the one with the fur.) Kelly always tells me I’m a sweet girl and how a family would be so lucky to have me as their pet. (She’s so nice to me!) I love all people, but I think kids are just the greatest! Do you think maybe I’m the girl for you? I’m looking for a home, and so are lots of my good dog & cat friends at Lucky Paws Shelter.
