F rank Lloyd Wright left a legacy through his work and the timeless buildings he created in Arizona. This home actually represents one of the few residential structures built by his first son, Frank Lloyd Wright, Jr. or “Lloyd Wright” as he was better known. Lloyd Wright also became an architect, and he designed this gem for his brother, David Wright, in 1968. For Arcadia, the sixties were a time when most of the area was still filled with orchards, and viewed as living in the country. This home is a reminder of that era. With its simplistic design and clean appearance, the exterior holds a definite Frank Lloyd Wright influence. Since Lloyd Wright served as his father’s construction manager for many years, he was familiar with both the limitations and creative possibilities available through block construction. This contemporary home sits on nearly an acre of land and is comprised of more than 4000 square feet. There have been very few updates made to this home which includes five bedrooms and four baths. From the kitchen window, you can imagine the Wright family enjoying breakfast in the swank retro setting of yesteryear. From there, the home naturally flows into the great room which is dominated by the original block construction fireplace. While every room in the house serves as a subtle reminder of its namesake architect, the game room really typifies the intricate and original design work of Lloyd Wright. From the pool table, you can see the signature windows and gray block design. The room also effectively utilizes Arizona’s natural light as an artistic accent. The house is also home to many original art pieces completed by family members. Last, a walk through the house to the patio reveals a hidden surprise. Showing off Lloyd Wright’s background in landscape architecture, the backyard is host to some of the most spectacular, unobstructed views of Camelback Mountain in Arcadia. The home of Not everyone appreciates the Mid-Modern architecture prevalent in this home by Lloyd Wright. The home has been completely bladed. I don’t know if this is a good or bad thing, but I really enjoyed this property when we toured it many years ago. It was for sale at the time and the argument could be made that if I liked it so much, why didn’t I buy it? I’m sure the new owners will make good use of this expansive property and the incredible views it affords.
