Different people have different triggers for asthma symptoms, including poor air quality along with animals (pet hair or dander), dust, changes in weather (most often cold weather), chemicals in the air or in food, exercise, mold, pollen, respiratory infections, stress and tobacco smoke. Every year, asthma causes more than 17 million visits to the emergency room, the physician’s of fi ce or urgent care, according to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 8 percent of adults and about 9 percent of children suffer from asthma, according to the CDC. If you have asthma, you understand being unable to catch your breath, then the sense of relief when your rescue inhaler opens up constricted airways. The good news is this: Better preventive medicine makes life easier for asthma sufferers year-round. If you’ve been diagnosed and you use your rescue inhaler or breathing treatment machine more than once or twice a week, it’s time to see a physician about preventive medicine. An asthma attack occurs when the muscles in your airways are in fl amed. As the air passages swell, it’s harder to breath. In severe cases, the airways can close completely, and, without immediate emergency attention, a person can die. Preventive medicine, inhaled or oral, will not take the place of a rescue inhaler in an emergency but will help control your reaction to triggers.
