Sure, there are a lot of them and they do last a while, but the way the boxing matches are put together keeps everyone’s interest and look as convincing as a fi ght between remote-controlled robots from the future can look. However, not everyone can do as well as the robots. Bailey (Lilly) is the daughter of the man who trained Charlie to box and the current owner of her late father’s workspace. She doesn’t play as big a part as she could have. In the beginning it seems like she’s got the same attitude and strength as expected from the daughter of a boxer. But as the movie progresses, she loses the depth of her character and becomes the typical love interest who tries to deny her attraction to the main character, but can’t resist his charm. On the other end of the scale, Max is a great and important element in the movie. Despite his youth, he acts older with his responses to his dad’s problems. He’s smart, tech-savvy and holds the movie together better than duct tape could. He brings out the humanity in both Charlie and Atom, making it possible to like both, especially Atom. Jackman fi ts the part of the uncaring father who would rather leave his son in a junkyard overnight during a storm than help him dig a robot out of the mud and haul it back to the car. In the beginning, Charlie acts as though he doesn’t care whether Max lives or dies. It’s hard to get this kind of character to grow a heart without making it seem like a random and extreme change. However, Charlie’s growth is pulled off in a convincing enough way to satisfy the audience. Perhaps a key ingredient to his character is Atom, as Atom seems to re fl ect Charlie in more ways than one. Aimed at impressing you with heart rather than fancy graphics despite being a movie about robots beating each other to scraps, Real Steel earns 3½ stars and I’d love to see it again!
