Page 42 November 2011 Brady Garrison ‘Unconventional’ a fi t at Biltmore Toastmasters club By Caroline Hester Brady Garrison is not a millionaire, he has never been married, has no children and his friends describe him as “unconventional.” None these things are important to him. “I know that however my life plays out, I’m going to be happy and ful fi lled, whether it includes a wife or whether it doesn’t,” Garrison said. “I’m going to have a rich and full life. “I’m not going to feel like I’m missing out.” Garrison said he focuses on activities that bring him joy and help him grow as a person. After living in Arcadia for a few years and working for a vending company, as well as being a freelance massage therapist, Garrison said he joined the Biltmore Toastmasters club to improve himself. “Initially, I joined just to practice and develop public-speaking skills with the thought that it would help me in every aspect of my life,” Garrison said. He didn’t anticipate becoming overly active in the club or winning a Toastmasters statewide humorous speech contest. However, he currently serves as president of Biltmore Toastmasters and won last year’s competition with his “Hair Raising Tale” speech that chronicled his journey into baldness. This year, Garrison took third place in the divisional humorous speech contest. His speech “Valley Metro” covered his realization that he is a metrosexual and all the grooming he partakes in. The competition breaks out into club, area, division and state. Continued on page 43 Family Practice Specialists 4350 E. Page 43 November 2011 Dogs Continued from page 24 Garrison Continued from page 42 Jeff Schulsinger said he initially spotted the therapy dog teams in the hospital hallways visiting other rooms and requested that his daughter receive a visit. “It relaxes the nervous system and it also helps ground her energy,” he said. Dina added, “I think dogs also are amazing, they just have so much love to give.” Sturm said that the animal therapy program is highly motivating and bene fi ts those involved. “This is animal-assisted therapy where we participate in the goals for the child,” Sturm said. “To motivate them to do anything from throwing a ball, to going on a walk.” Animal Assisted Therapy volunteer and dog escort Karen Peltin said that the act of simply engaging with these dogs can completely alter the moods of the patients and families. “It’s therapy for everybody; its staff, its families, its kids,” Peltin said. Amy Devening, who is a physical therapist at the hospital, said that having the therapy dogs helps encourage patients to participate in exercise and physical therapy essential to their recovery. “It makes therapy more fun and the kids don’t see it as work, they see it as playing,” she said. Garrison credited his success in the club to preparation, practice and an instinct for knowing what will make people laugh. “He’s like that,” said longtime friend Jonathan Harris. “He’s just naturally funny and quick.” Harris and Garrison have been friends since they were 10 and attended school together in Phoenix from fi fth grade through high school. “He’s constantly trying to improve himself,” Harris said. Throughout their adult life Harris said his friend continues to challenge himself. At 30, Garrison decided to learn Spanish. A 40, he taught himself to play guitar. He likes to get out of his comfort zone. Whether taking his guitar to play at an open mic night or performing his rehearsed speeches in competition, he refuses to be paralyzed by fear, Garrison said. “There’s more that I want to accomplish,” he said. His current project is working to expand his massage business. No matter what the task, Garrison’s friends and peers said he is dedicated and driven. His own philosophy in life, Garrison said, is to not be a person who conforms. “I told myself I would never settle, ever,” he said.
