It’s almost impossible to escape the daily dose of dreadfully depressing stories of death, destruction and disaster. Spend even a short stint working in a newsroom and you’re stained with cynicism whether you like it or not. The profession seems to attract cynics to begin with, and few reporters or editors lose the trait even after leaving the profession. That’s one of the reasons I enjoy putting together the Arcadia News for you, your friends and your family. For the most part, our pages are fi lled with happy stories for and about a happy place. Stories that make you proud of the people in your neighborhood. That’s never been more true than our story this month on page 46. Madeleine James is 13 and attends Ingleside Middle School. She returned to comfy Arcadia from a summer in Swaziland, Africa determined to help the orphans she met. She’s looking for assistance collecting sneakers and soccer balls for the kids. November being the month of Thanksgiving, it’s only fi tting that everyone reading this helps her out.
