Page 31 November 2011 WINDSOR 5223 N. Central Ave., Phoenix www.windsoraz.com ‘Glori fi ed bar food ... a little better than our competition’ By Gabe Bertacinni Sitting at the stylish bar in one corner I order a classy Manhattan made with rye, Carpano Antica vermouth and maraschino cherry liqueur. Not only are the cocktails excellent, should you be so inclined, you can eat, and eat well, at the newly reinvented restaurant just off the bar. Craig DeMarco, who created Postino, the original in Arcadia and the wine bar’s Central Avenue location, as well as the highly successful La Grande Orange, is on board for this new eating experience. And he’s really engaged with the new concept, fi ne-tuning the menu, devising specials and turning out some classic American staples. “It is glori fi ed bar food that’s casual, accessible and family friendly,” DeMarco said. “The goal is fast execution, a good price point and recognizable items that we make a little better than our competition.” And it couldn’t be any truer. With just a small, unpretentious sign outside the building the Windsor is in a 1940s building north of Camelback Road on Central Avenue. The setting includes a patio and courtyard. Built as an indoor-outdoor restaurant, Windsor’s front room is cozy, warm and intimate with its windows facing the street and the opening to a gorgeous patio. Inside is the bar with its wraparound counter, skilled bartenders mixing drinks and several leather booths where people are chatting, unwinding and grabbing a bite or two after a long day working. It’s a warm and welcoming space that stays open until late most nights, serving simple bar and American staples. After some of the more excruciating seating I’ve endured, these booths are sheer luxury, an invitation to linger over dinner in this handsome space. Inside, it’s wild and loud – it’s true – but with such a sense of fun that you’d have to be a real curmudgeon to mind. The music playlist of the ‘80s invokes an unspeci fi c past. What’s to eat? Admittedly, at fi rst glance, the menu looks a little ho-hum – been there, ate that, with familiar items like pork ribs, crab cakes, pastrami and pulled pork. However, it’s the creativity of the dishes that’s telling in the way they go together, making the balance of these rustic preparations seem effortless. First come the starters, which are better enjoyed with one of the many great cocktails Windsor offers. You can opt for a house selection of cured meats and farm cheese with pickled vegetables, mixed nuts and deliciously toasted MJ breads. The picnic kebobs are full of fl avor. You can choose between chicken, pork, shrimp or mixed veggies served with a spicy pepper dip and gold sauce. There are other appetizers that are good for sharing, such as the cheddar fondue with warm MJ pretzel, marble rye, apple slices and sausages, and the fresh and bright ceviche, marinated white fi sh and shrimp with cucumber, tomato, onion Serrano chilies and cilantro with house- made chips. This is a place where fl avors practically jump off the plate into your mouth. The food is less about show-stopping technique and more about delicious, easygoing food with bright fl avors. As the evening progresses, the noise level ratchets ever upward, mitigated somewhat if you sit in the patio. It’s a late-evening crowd, too.
