Page 27 November 2011 Sugahbeat Continued from page 25 “I’ve been here (Arcadia) since I was 2,” he said. “I grew up on Lafayette and I went to Hopi, Ingleside and Brophy.” About six months ago, they got the musical itch and decided to pursue their passion a second time, now that their children are a little older. “We just started feeling it and wrote about 25 songs,” Reckling said. They recruited several musicians they knew. “We knew some of the members from the band I used to be in, Azz Izz,” Reckling said. “I played with (drummer Derric Butler) 15 years ago and I knew (guitarist Robert Cote) from my years playing and we recruited him.” In all, the Sugahbeat lineup is made up of Katherine Reckling on vocals, Mark Reckling on steel drums and keyboards, Hai Jung Choi on bass, Butler on drums, and Cote on guitar. The band played a small show at the Arcadia Tavern to feel out the public reception to their sound, a mixture of genres in fl uenced by the various members’ experiences and tastes. The group uses aspects of World Beat, Reggae, Calypso, Latin and Jazz, among others. “We have a big, upbeat sound with a lot of improvisation,” Reckling said. Sugahbeat soon was playing regularly on Friday nights. The members also started to play shows at local resorts. The band played at the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa in late October. “At the Tavern, people were up and dancing to us by about 7:30 or 8,” Reckling said. “That is pretty early compared to most of the cocktail hours I have played.” Instead of rehearsing constantly, the band members prefer to work on a more relaxed schedule that allows the members to focus on the various aspects of their lives. They rehearse once a week – with the gear set up in the living room and kids running around and dancing. At the same time, the group tries to prepare a meal to enjoy together afterwards. “Katherine will be singing into the microphone one second and then she’ll run over to the stove to check on some food,” Reckling said. “This should be some sort of reality show.” A few months back, the group played at the Cabo Wabo event at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. Reckling is quick to point out that they are growing at a moderate pace, though. They are always focused on their families and the other pieces of their lives. “We’ll do a couple of nights and bring the kids with us to make a sort of vacation out of it.” As their children grow older, the Recklings said they are hopeful they can join in on the fun. “Right now, we’ll bring a family member with us like a niece or something and they can watch the kids while we perform,” Reckling said. “But they are getting old enough to where they can start to watch us.” The Recklings said they are happy with the direction the band is moving, somewhere between a rock star lifestyle and the more normal world of elementary school and real estate. “It is harder to stay up all night and just write songs,” Reckling said. “We don’t take it quite as seriously as we used to.” The mixture between family, music, business and life seems to provide the balance they seek. “Some nights we will just hop on our cruisers and hit our favorite spots in the neighborhood,” Reckling said. “We’ll write songs on our date nights at places like Chelsea’s Kitchen.” Scott R.
