Page 23 November 2011 Real Steel’s battling bots lots of fun Real Steel Director: Shawn Levy Actors: Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo, and Evangeline Lilly Real Steel may follow a familiar plotline, but that doesn’t make it boring or a bad movie. The movie is set in the near future and focuses on Charlie Kenton (Jackman), an ex-boxer who watched as robot boxing took the place of regular boxing as one of the biggest sports in the world. He became a promoter for this new kind of fi ghting, though he’s currently deep in debt and without a robot. On top of that, an ex from long ago has died and Max (Goyo), the son he abandoned 11 years ago, comes back into his life. Against Charlie’s advice, Max puts his faith in a sparring bot he found named Atom. Atom proves himself worthy and slowly rises in status from “worthless junkyard bot” to one of the most well- known names in the robot-boxing world. Even though the basic plotline is the adult without morals needing a kid to help him grow as a character, this movie adds physical violence, which make it stand out from the comedies with the same idea. Most of the movies with this story are about growing up and maturity. While this one has those themes, it focuses on endurance and the idea that no matter how fancy and shiny a robot is, it can have its lights punched out just like the rest. Literally and fi guratively. Now, because it seems anything about Real Steel can’t exclude the mention of it, let’s talk Transformers. While the bots in the latter all have the same look of giant hunks of metal with arms and legs somewhere in the mix, the robot boxers have some real personality. Almost every bot introduced has its own signature look, and their names aren’t as hard to remember as the robots in Transformers.
