It’s an early opt-in pursuit with adult supervision from someone outside of the home. We learned to take bumps and bangs, what it feels like to win and how to behave when you don’t. We picked girls’ sports because that activity isn’t as commonly rewarded and supported. In the middle of this economic dif fi culty, I recognize that schools are hurting to keep programs going just as are cities and families. I fi gured if we could get the private sector to help in an area that often is hit hard and early in a recession, we could keep this valuable early life lesson available and valuable for more of the people we all too soon will count on to run our cities, schools, businesses and families. Next month’s column will identify another program area where we were able to gather donations from the private sector to help solve an important need in our Arcadia neighborhood. Thanks go to those who dug into their wallets to make this happen. You go, girls. Phoenix City Councilman Sal DiCiccio can be reached at council.district.6@ phoenix.gov or 602-262-7491. Using your ears can avoid costly automobile repairs By Brittany Morris Did you hear that? Those in the know about engines said that if drivers just listened a little, they could avoid costly repairs. In a blog post, Courtesy Chevrolet detailed three sounds that should send up red fl ags: High pitched squealing Squealing is representative of brake pads that have been worn away over time, and are in need of repair replacement, Jack Walker, the service manager at Courtesy Chevrolet said. Damage or breakage to the rotor is at stake. Mechanical sound with loose steering If this sound is paired with a loose steering wheel, this could affect the car’s overall function. Mechanical knocking sound when turning This is representative of faulty constant velocity (CV) joints, and could affect the car’s steering abilities. Drivers should also check their oil regularly, and pay keen attention to the service lights on the dashboard, said Scott Petrie, a service adviser at Tony’s Auto Service. “The smaller things, like checking the pressure in your tires, will save your car,” he said. Petrie and Walker said drivers should read the instruction manual for their vehicle. All too often, manuals go unread, and not knowing how to use a vehicle causes problems. “A lot of the time, drivers hear a noise, or something happens, and they drive more. It just makes it worse,” he said. Instead professionals at Courtesy Chevrolet and Tony’s Auto Service Repair encourage car owners to call a mechanic for advice. “People don’t come to us until something is wrong – but we’re here to help and give advice whether or not your car is broken,” Walker said.
