Page 14 November 2011 Society Continued from page 12 Former secretary of the Chinese Baptist Church, Mary Tang, said that the Arizona Jewish Historical Society has sincerely honored all of the people and religious assemblies that have occupied the heritage center building. Currently the museum is showcasing the Centennial Exhibit New Frontiers: Jewish Pioneers in the Arizona Territory to inform the public about the early Jewish pioneers and their achievements. The exhibit provides detail about the challenges the early Jewish pioneers faced, including fi nding kosher foods, jobs, marriage partners and a place of worship. Numerous artifacts, such as traditional wedding dresses, saddles, photographs and newspaper articles about the fi rst pioneers, are displayed throughout the museum exhibit. Bell said the focus of museum at the Cutler-Plotkin Center is not to display a museum of tolerance, rather a place of acknowledgement. “A museum of tolerance implies that we do not like someone. We do not promote tolerance,” Bell said. “Our project is to promote a common understanding and awareness of multiple people.” Bell said that the heritage center plans to display future exhibits that focus on other cultures, religions and ethnicities to shed light on the diversity that lies within Arizona and throughout the City of Phoenix. As a historical society, Bell said it is important to remember and honor people who have done good works in the community. The Jewish society will host its second annual Heritage Award dinner this month to honor Jerry Colangelo. Aside from being the former owner and CEO of the Phoenix Suns basketball team, bringing major league baseball to Phoenix and recently being named Humanitarian of the Year by Sinai Institute, Colangelo has supported countless organizations and charities, such as Lift Up America, Boys and Girls Club, Young Life, Mentor Kids, United Way and many more. Proceeds will directly bene fi t the ongoing restoration of the Cutler-Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center and its future museum exhibits. a a l Garden • Arcadia High • Peo op p p p s o o • St. Theresa • Basketball • Ki id d ds i se e eums • Softball • Shemer Art • Ch hr r ri r Vo o o ol lleyball • Neighborhood News • Spo o or N te e e er rtainment • Ingleside • Football • N N N a en n n nt ts • Squaw Peak • Recreation • Dram m m ma a d Da a an nce • Church News • Hopi • Arc ca a a n l lt t th & Fitness • Arts & Entertainme e e en n a s s • Hopi • Football • Desert Botani ic c c ca otan S a ad d d dia High • People • Phoenix Zoo • S S a High • People • Phoenix Zoo a as s sketball • Kids • Tavan • Museums s etball • Kids • Ta h he er A l w w w Peak • Recreation • Drama • Baseb ba a a hu u ur rch News • H i Botanical Garden.
