Culver St., Phoenix COST: $395 per person By Valeri Spiwak The Arizona Jewish Historical Society at the Cutler-Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center in Phoenix is continually recognized for its dedication to preserving and educating the public about the local heritage and contributions of the early Jewish communities. Phoenix has named the Center one of its “points of pride” for the city’s upcoming centennial anniversary next year. “Everything that we do today will be history for someone tomorrow,” said Lawrence Bell, executive director at the heritage center. “Part of our mission is not just to research what happened a long time ago, but to also preserve the documents of what’s going on today.” Society veteran Jerry Lewkowitz said knowing Phoenix’s history is important. “It’s very important that we realize the foundation that was built for us. You don’t compete with the past, but carry it forward,” Lewkowitz said. “The early pioneers established a foundation so we could move forward to build a great society.” Originally constructed in 1921, what is now the Jewish Heritage Center was Phoenix’s fi rst synagogue. In 1957, the center became a Chinese-speaking congregation known as the First Chinese Baptist Church. Due to its rapid expansion, the First Chinese Baptist Church relocated to an alternate site, leaving the heritage center available for the formation of a Spanish- speaking Baptist church. In 1981, the Iglesia Bautista Baptist congregation was formed and established its place of worship at the vacant heritage center. After spending 20 years in the building, Iglesia Bautista relocated and wanted to sell the space. With the help of community donations, the Jewish Historical Society bought the building in 2002, creating the Cutler-Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center. “Within the building there has been prayer said in Hebrew, Chinese, Spanish and English,” Bell said. “You have all of these different cultures that all shared this place as a house of worship.” Continued on page 14 Our Locations 7245 E.
