Page 10 November 2011 This is a glimpse of the types of cases handled in justice courts. Last, but certainly not least, in Arizona a justice of the peace can perform marriage ceremonies. Sharing this special occasion with people is undoubtedly one of the highlights of my job. After a dif fi cult day in court it’s always nice to share such a special moment with a couple and their closest friends and family. For more information on the Maricopa County Justice Courts, please visit: http:// justicecourts.maricopa.gov. Steven Sarkis is the justice of the peace for the Arcadia Biltmore Justice Court. If diagnosed, keep a rescue inhaler and breathing treatment machine plus medicine, mask and tubing on hand and know how to use them. If you remain short of breath after treatment, seek emergency medical attention. Other signs that need immediate emergency attention are a bluish color to the lips and face, decreased alertness, drowsiness or confusion, extreme dif fi culty breathing, a rapid pulse, sweating, and severe anxiety due to shortness of breath. If your symptoms are accompanied by discolored mucus or a high fever, talk to your doctor because you could be showing signs of bronchitis or pneumonia. In Phoenix, we often see people who have undiagnosed asthma after moving here. If you have trouble lying fl at and sleeping, unexplained shortness of breath or a dry cough that won’t go away, talk to your primary care physician. While these are symptoms of asthma, they also could be signs of heart or lung disease and should be checked out. John Woellner, M.D., is a family physician at Arcadia Family Clinic. Page 11 November 2011 This month’s report from Councilman Sal DiCiccio Good news: My of fi ce collected about $5,000 in donations to help Arcadia youth sports continue to inspire, train and entertain children and teens in our neighborhoods, keeping them engaged and positively active in these tough times. The money gathered will go to Arcadia High School girls’ sports. Even though education is not part of the charge for the city council, I have always believed we should help work on problems that impact our families. These dollars will go to helping develop good habits early and to avoid the pitfalls of youthful idle hours. I grew up in a fairly poor family in the Valley, and sports provided an outlet for my brothers and me to vent our energy and learn adult lessons. The hook was fun and competition – and hanging with friends – but it also gave us experience and lessons we would not have gotten just sitting around playing video games, or worse. Sports taught me both the pain and the gain of trying your hardest. At the same time, we learned how to sublimate our Continued on page 18 AVENSCROFT HARON D. R S T C L F HE AVANAGH AW IRM, P.A. Ravenscroft, Esq., Beneficiary Deed in essence is a “pay on death designation” for real property. Upon a person’s death, the named beneficiary can record a death certificate and obtain title to the property. Probate is not needed. Without a Beneficiary Deed, real property needs to be probated unless it is held in trust. The Beneficiary Deed is fully revocable until the owner dies or if there are two owners, until the last owner dies. The Beneficiary Deed is a great tool for people who do not want to have a trust and have “pay on death” designations on their accounts. The Beneficiary Deed is not a good tool to leave real property to more than three people or to minors or to adults with special needs receiving government assistance. A Why a Beneficiary Deed? Sharon’s practice focuses on the preparation of wills, trusts and other estate planning documents, such as powers of attorney, domestic partnership agreements and premarital agreements, as well as trust administration, probate, creation of LLCs and business law. 13250 N.
