Page 48 October 2011 They fi nd prosthetics specialist Dr. McCarthy (Freeman) and ask him to try and make a prosthetic tail for Winter. With the help of Dr. Haskett, Hazel and Dr. McCarthy - and support from his mom (Judd) - Sawyer tries to save his new best friend, Winter. This sweet story about a strong bond between dolphin and boy actually works in 3-D. This is one of the only movies, if not the only one, that should be seen in 3-D. The 3-D enhances the experience and effect during certain scenes. It’s especially true in the opening scene, an underwater tour. Morgan Freeman was amazing, as always, and seems to love the role of the oddball prosthetics doctor who may joke around, but he’s also wise and gives advice every once in a while. Cozi Zuehlsdorff is adorable in her fi rst major role as the young, caring Hazel. Zuehlsdorff is herself home-schooled, which is a neat twist since her character is, too. Another great performance comes from Kris Kristofferson as Dr. Haskett’s father, Hazel’s grandfather. Though these three don’t get as much screen time as they should, Kristofferson especially isn’t seen much, they each have something about them that makes their characters lovable. One of the best movies for kids out in theaters right now, I give Dolphin Tale 4 stars. If this movie inspires you to see more fl icks about animals that will steal your heart, check these out: Duma (2005) Based on the book, How It Was With Dooms: A True Story From Africa by Carol Cawthra Hopcraft and Xan Hopcraft, the movie documents a young boy, Xan, living in South Africa with his parents when he fi nds an orphaned cheetah. They name him Dooms, from the Swahili word for male cheetah cub, duma, and he becomes Xan’s best friend as well as his pet. Xan and Duma make a perilous trek across the desert to save Duma’s life. Free Willy (1993) A young orphan named Jesse gets in trouble while spraying graf fi ti in a theme park. He gets a new foster family and at fi rst has a rough relationship with them. His punishment for the crime involves cleaning up the damage he caused at the park, where there is new attraction: Willy, the killer whale. Both the boy and the whale are stuck away from family, and they befriend each other. However, the owner of the park believes Willy’s worth more dead than alive. Jesse, with the help of Willy’s sincere trainers, tries to save Willy and return him to the ocean. Two Brothers (2004) In the jungles of French colonial Indochina circa the 1920s, two tiger cubs are separated from their mother and each other when a hunter kills their father. Koumal is sent to a circus and is beaten and forced to perform tricks while Sangha is sent to a wealthy family to be the companion of a government of fi cial’s son. However, under the belief that Sangha is too much trouble, he’s sent away to where he’s pressured to be an aggressive prize fi ghter. Both are miserable in their new surroundings, and make an attempt to escape back to the forest and to each other. Fly Away Home (1996) Inspired by a true story, Amy Alden is 13 when her mother dies and she’s sent to live with her father, a sculptor. They don’t have a very close relationship, but are slowly brought closer when Amy fi nds a nest full of abandoned Canadian Goose eggs. She takes care of them until they hatch, and continues to care for them until they run into a problem: migration time is coming and the geese haven’t learned to migrate south for winter. They also see Amy as their “mother.” Amy’s dad uses his hobby fl ying lightweight aircrafts to solve this problem, creating a small one-person aircraft. The plan is for Amy to fl y the small plane and lead the geese on the migratory route to the South in hopes the birds will follow her. Watch it to fi nd out.
