Cookbook Continued from page 38 “Growing up, food has always been a huge deal for our family, and we always gathered around food,” Goossen said. “All my friends at the lunch table in the fi fth grade would want to trade me their Oreos for my mom’s homemade cookies.” Goossen, a stay-at-home mother to 5-year-old Sophia and Colin, 3, said as a child she would spend hours watching her mother bake, yet she didn’t learn to cook herself until she was married. Along with focusing on her college education, Goossen said learning how to cook for her new husband Craig was a top priority. “My husband’s brother was a huge chef in Los Angeles and I could barely boil water,” she said. “For the fi rst Christmas we were married, his brother bought me a huge stack of cookbooks, and made sure they were ones I could learn from. That’s where I started.” Susan Hambright, Goossen’s mother who has lived in Arcadia for nearly three years, said she is touched to now be watching her daughter do something that her daughter watched her do for years. “With the different generations it’s neat to see how cooking styles have changed,” she said. “Amanda gets out a cookbook and wants to try exotic things that I was afraid to do because I had very simple, home cooking.” Hambright said although cooking has transformed throughout the generations, the baking in the family has remained the same. “We would all watch my dad make pies – he made his crust from scratch – and he was incredible,” she said. “We lost my dad but Amanda has his mixer, and just to think that she’s using my dad’s mixer that is so old, but she’s making wonderful things with it.” As Papa aged, one of the fi rst things to go was his ability to make pies, Hambright said. She said it’s her goal to learn how to make the crust in the coming year with Goossen. “I’m so afraid to make a pie crust, but it’s my goal,” she said. “If I have to make 10 pies and throw them in the trash I don’t care because I want to learn how to make a pie crust.” Goossen said she started baking pies in the past year and has found her pies turn out best when she references fi ve or six online recipes to mix and match the fi lling ingredients and directions. She said she’s “obsessed with local, fresh, in- season produce” so she made a peach pie, although still using store-bought crust at this point. “The one barrier I couldn’t cross was the crust because that was something Papa was so great at,” she said. “Papa was, is and always will be the greatest person to ever live and that’s his thing.” Amanda Goossen starts writing a column this month in the Arcadia News about her search for the best sweets in the Valley.
