Page 4 October 2011 By Dale Messmer Experts say that nearly everyone reading this will either get breast cancer, know someone who has or had the disease or have another connection to the cancer (such as a friend’s friend, for instance). In October, pink breaks out throughout the nation, bringing awareness of the killer disease and the need for a cure. We like to think we’re doing our small part. We won an award last year for our coverage of breast-cancer awareness. I was worried, though, that we’d be unable to fi nd different angles to top that effort. The package of stories this year, however, is even better than last year, I think. I’m proud of the work of our reporters and city editor. Coverage starts on page 34 with some details about the Pink Light District (by Brittany Morris) and a story about a local doctor doing his part to help patients recover (by Christina Sampson). Christina, who is new to the staff starting this month, has a moving piece on page 43 about the tough task of telling children about mom’s af fl iction. There are examples of how others handled the situation and tips on what newly-stricken women can do. Just a warning: it’s liable to make you cry. It did folks during production. We hope the stories are helpful and informative. To those close to me with the disease or in remission, please know you are in my prayers. To anyone else, please keep up the fi ght. There are a lot of other stories to grab your attention. Pueblo Grande is opening tours of some special museum pieces. The story starts on page 32. The museum is a wonderfully educational place, showcasing the contributions of the people who came before us and fi rst conquered, and prospered by, the Salt River. My son spent a lot of time there as a child, so there’s a soft spot in my heart for the museum and staff. In a Valley full of things to do, you should add Pueblo Grande to your list of must-do activities. And, of course, October means Halloween. A doctor’s advice for the holiday (page 15) highlights coverage. Finally, we debut a new column in the Dining section. Sweet Treats, by Amanda Goossen, promises a monthly look at goodies from around the Valley. Thanks for reading the Arcadia News .
