Page 32 October 2011 Vault slated for tours By Christina Sampson There’s a closed door in the Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park lobby, just to the right of the entrance into the fi rst exhibit hall – normally it’s off limits to visitors seeking a glimpse into the life of prehistoric, Salt River Valley Arizonans, speci fi cally the Hohokam tribe. This fall, Holly Young, the museum curator, will open that door. The tour takes place in an expansion wing of the museum built to house growing archeology projects and collections. The tours are scheduled for 2 p.m. Oct. 12, Oct. 26, Nov. 9 and Dec. 21. The door leads into a long, cool hallway with various-sized rooms jutting off, each a glimpse into the inner workings of a museum. The fi rst stop is the tidy research library. While academics, students, and anyone else with an archeological penchant can’t check out the books, they are welcome to view the materials by appointment. Next is the collections lab that features a specialized ventilation system. Here, volunteers clean fragments of pottery and care for collections by re- bagging and re-boxing various artifacts.
