Inspired by a true story, Dolphin Tale is a heartwarming story about survival that entertains even through some of the credits. When a young dolphin gets caught and injured in a crab trap, she’s found on the beach and rescued by a team from the Clearwater Marine Hospital and young Sawyer Nelson (Gamble). The dolphin, named Winter, had to have her tail removed. The odds of survival against her with her tail gone, Winter trains herself to swim by swishing her tail back and forth rather than the usual up and down. However, that didn’t solve everything. Dolphins aren’t supposed to move their tails that way, and swimming like that could kill her. But Sawyer and his new friends at the marine hospital, Dr. Clay Haskett (Connick Jr.) and his daughter, Hazel (Zuehlsdorff), won’t give up just yet. Page 23 October 2011 The program offers a state-of-the-art unit, surgeons capable of performing complex open-heart surgeries and access to a physician when emergencies arise at home or in the hospital, she said. “There are a few simple things that we can do to not only save their life, but ensure that they have a quality of life,” Rumack said. Molly Wright said she felt like her 3-year-old son, Mark, had “ fi rst-class service” with the accessibility of the program. “I knew I could bring him in at a moment’s notice,” she said. “I think I would have had a nervous breakdown if I didn’t have that.” Mark has hypo-plastic left-heart syndrome, which occurs when parts of the left side of the heart do not develop completely. Wright said she received almost daily contact from someone at the hospital, including texts from Rumack asking how Mark was doing. Mark recently returned home from his third open heart surgery and graduated from the program. Sixty percent of infants with his condition live to the age of 5. The program reported a mortality rate of 4.4 percent between procedures, compared to a national average of 10 percent to 15 percent. “We do what we can to keep (our patients) safe, but this is a high-risk population and we know we are not going to be able to save every single one,” Rumack said. Rumack said her team ensures every baby gets to the hospital when problems arise. The goal is to never have a child die at home. “No parent should have to go through that at home,” she said. “We should be the ones making the dif fi cult decisions in the hospital.” Rumack said a large part of the program is making sure the parents are educated about their child’s condition. The hospital informs parents to monitor breathing patterns, vomiting, body temperature and eating habits. Every parent gets a passport card with his or her child’s information and heart condition. In the case of emergency, Rumack said they are able to give the card to a medical professional for a faster assessment and triage. Melodie Mendivil’s daughter Scarlett has a heart condition that does not allow blood fl ow between her right ventricle and lungs. She was enrolled in the program when she was born in February 2009. “It has been wonderful,” Mendivil said. “I don’t know what I would have done without them. “I feel like they saved her life,” Mendivil said. “I am so incredibly grateful.” Hotline Continued from page 16 4130 n marshall way . scottsdale . 480.946.5076 www.artonegalleryinc.com art one gallery representing students of american and european universities, local and community colleges, high schools, and emerging arizona artists since 1993. the travels of mr billows • jennifer gross ceramic & mixed media • 17”h x 14”w x 9”d els of mr billows • jennifer gross ceramic & mixed media • 17”h x 14”w x 9”d the trave Thank a Teacher Know a teacher who really makes a difference?
