Page 18 October 2011 Total compensation increased 23 percent during the Great Recession, up to about $100,000. City employees can retire in their 50s with generous pensions. So while you have been dealing with reduced income and equity, the city has been increasing your taxes and fees – including these skyrocketing water fees – while handing out raises as if it were Boom City. Arizona lost 300,000 jobs during the Great Recession. Guess how many people were let go from the city? Just 15. How does that compare to the private sector world around you? What can you do about this? Demand that those you elect represent you at city hall. The national union bosses, special interest and bene fi ciaries have become extremist in their self interest and will say and do anything to take more from you to protect their way of life. Your elected representatives must be reminded that they work for you and only you and your family. If you don’t vote, expect more of the same. Still, parents should check candy and throw away unwrapped or homemade items. As for your own home, always give away pre-packaged treats. Think about stickers, fun pencils or plastic spiders as a fun (and healthier) alternative to candy. Trick or Treating Plan for the weather as October can be warm or cold. Take along a fl ashlight and make sure your child has a cell phone and/ or your number in his or her pocket, in case you get separated. Talk to your children about what to do if you get separated. Stay in groups with adult supervision and go in familiar areas. Cross on the corners and, if there is no sidewalk, walk facing traf fi c. Pay attention to traf fi c because drivers don’t always pay attention to you. Ritu Sadhu, M.D., practices at Arcadia Family Clinic, 4131 N. 24th St., Suite B-102, Phoenix. Which is exactly what Abigail Chamberlin, a recent Valley transplant, was hoping to do to create her costume as the Black Swan. “I love the black tutu,” Chamberlin said as she searched for a black leotard and some pantyhose. “They have a lot of different things here; army stuff, medical, hippie,” added Maria Isa Rollinger, Chamberlin’s roommate who was with her. “You can fi nd everything here.” Summer Dunham, marketing manager for Goodwill, said response thus far has been “great.” She said the decision to invest in new products was to help give customers a “one-stop shopping” experience. Goodwill is also sponsoring a Halloween costume contest for the most creative costume in which people can enter to win an electronics package. The contest runs from Oct. 1 through Oct. 31. Contestants can enter by taking a picture of their costume and sending it to getcreative@goodwillaz.org or by posting it to Goodwill’s Facebook page at www. facebook.com/goodwillaz.
