Page 16 October 2011 Health Hotline to assist with infants’ emergencies By Jordan Fracas Phoenix Children’s Hospital provides parents of infants with high-risk heart conditions a 24-hour hotline for around the clock care, medical emergencies and a reassuring peace of mind. The Complex Congenital Heart Infant Evaluation and Follow-up program (CHIEF) allows parents of patients to call and speak to a nurse practitioner if their child is displaying signs of heart-related complications. “Things can change drastically at any time with this population,” said Beth Rumack, a fetal and neonatal cardiac nurse practitioner at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The program is committed to providing open lines of communication between parents, pediatricians and physicians, she said. “We really just want to give the families the support they need to get through this,” Rumack said. The program works with newborns to patients up to 9 months. It is modeled after a similar program at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin that pioneered in-home congenital heart care, Rumack said. The program began at St. Joseph Hospital in 2007, but operations moved to Phoenix Children’s Hospital in June after a company merger. More than 100 infants with complex congenital heart problems have been part of the program. Continued on page 23 DR.
