Page 35 September 2011 And on Sunday, it’s a day of chicken and fi xins Heather MacLean and Mark Russell share cooking duties and enjoy creating their traditional, down-home Sunday dinners. By Christia Gibbons A sign in Heather MacLean’s and Mark Russell’s kitchen reads: Home is where your story begins. Find the two living their story as they pad around their Biltmore-area kitchen in bare feet cooking a dish they invented to bring the smells of Sunday-around-the- table-with-family into their home. “I think we both were a little homesick for that traditional Sunday dinner,” Heather said. They looked around and saw they had all the ingredients necessary to create their own special meal. Key to such a dinner, Heather said, is that it must fi ll the kitchen with wonderful smells throughout the day. The kind of dish that can be put together before church, slow cooked, and be ready whenever the family gets together to eat. “We kind of created something that fi ts for both of us,” Mark said. They experimented with chicken broth, wine and sherry, and with varying temperatures and cooking times until they hit on the recipe they share this month – Sunday Chicken. The couple has been friends for years. Heather, who is an Arcadia High School graduate and Biltmore-Arcadia area Realtor, even sold Mark several homes. Mark is the founder of Oregano’s Pizza Bistro. He founded his fi rst Oregano’s in 1993 in Old Town Scottsdale in honor of his late parents Jack and Shirley, using old family recipes. “My basic principle is that I never date clients, ever, ever, ever,” Heather said. Still the two had business dealings and business lunches, consulting with each other professionally and personally. Then, two years ago they found themselves unattached from others, and began dating. Mark popped the question in June, and the two are planning an April 21 wedding. “We just enjoy each other,” Mark summed it up. The couple shares cooking duties, cooking at home on average fi ve times a week. “We both have always loved cooking,” Heather said, adding, “My mother is an incredible cook.” The two often eat Sunday dinners with Heather’s parents Barbara and Charles, but the folks were out of town that Sunday when the two got nostalgic for an old- fashioned Sunday meal. “We look at cooking together as spending time together,” Heather said. “It’s that sweet spot in the day.” Mark added: “It’s fun, it’s an activity.
