Arcadia fullback Sosaia Maafu is poised for a big season after rushing for 648 yards last year. Photos by Dale Messmer. Quarterback Cole Richardson has a year under his belt, but one of the biggest questions heading into the season is if he’ll have the protection from his offensive line that he needs. Titans enter new season with con fi dence, questions By Wayne Schutsky While the start of the Arcadia football season is still weeks away, fans will have plenty of storylines to pour over in the days leading up to the opening televised game against Coronado on August 26. One of the biggest questions facing the coaching staff over the summer revolved around who would line up under center for the Titans. The team struggled through the air during last year’s 6-5 fi nish, and head coach Jim Ellison decided to go into the summer with a little competition at the quarterback position between incumbent senior Cole Richardson and junior Payson Kendle. Instead of naming a starter at the beginning of camp, the staff would give incumbent both quarterbacks equal reps during passing league before it made its fi nal decision regarding the position. “We’re going to give them equal opportunities and decide when it is time,” Ellison said during passing league. “I don’t plan on going into the season with a platoon system.” Both quarterbacks showed their merit during the summer and forced the coaches to make a dif fi cult decision, said Ellison. “We are really comfortable with both guys back there, but we are going to go with Cole,” Ellison said. Richardson’s experience at the varsity level and improved decision-making capabilities ultimately allowed him to keep the job. However, Ellison is quick to point out that the decision should not discount Kendle’s talent or work ethic. Richardson showed huge heart last year but sometimes struggled with his accuracy. If the second-year starter’s passing-league improvements translate on game nights, the Titan passing game should be in much better shape than last year. Kendle, who showed his mettle with a couple of big throws against Williams Field last season, will still see some playing time due to the fact that Richardson will also be playing on the defensive side of the ball as a safety. “We will need Payson to step up once in a while,” Ellison said. “I am comfortable putting him out there in any situation.” Some of the blame for last year’s passing woes can also fall on the unsteady receiving corp. Dropped passes and sloppy routes hurt the offense’s momentum and shook the quarterback’s con fi dence. This year, Ellison thinks things will be different with his wide outs. “I have three guys I can trust out there,” Ellison said. Sophomore starter Alex Reynolds will anchor the group and provide a sure- handed target for Richardson to throw to.
