Shea Blvd. Phoenix, AZ 85028 Arcadia teacher selected for elite exchange program By Brittany Morris Annette Reiley, an Arcadia resident and Spanish teacher at Independence High School in Glendale, will spend the next school year in Pachuca, Hidalgo in Mexico after receiving a Fulbright Classroom Teacher Exchange Award. She was one of 60 teachers chosen nationwide. Sponsored by the U.S. government, the program allows a recipient to switch roles with a teacher from a designated city for the academic year. Rather than teaching beginning and intermediate levels of Spanish in Arizona, Reiley will be teaching university level English at the University of the State of Hidalgo. Isabel Cervantes, Reiley’s partner in the program, will assume her post teaching high school Spanish. Prior to teaching, Reiley was a secretary for the state and city-court systems in both Arizona and California. In the span of nine years she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Phoenix College and Ottawa University while working full time. She has taught for the past 15 years. “What’s funny is that with this opportunity with the Fulbright program, I’ll be able to use my master’s degree for the fi rst time. Its focus is teaching English as a second language,” Reiley said. In addition, the program will help her improve her Spanish speaking skills, she said. Much of her current skill is derived from a course with Phoenix College that allowed her to travel to Cuernavaca, Morelos in Mexico for three weeks at a time, staying with host families and submersing herself in the culture. “My No. 1 goal is to achieve the fl uency,” she said. “Although Morelos was a wonderful opportunity, we can’t achieve fl uency in the three weeks and plant yourself. It will make me a much better Spanish teacher when I return.” Reiley said she has forged a bond with Cervantes and has begun the orientation process. “The program puts you in touch with your partner and has various orientations that cover culture shock, the location and various other topics.” She will meet her partners and her fellow participants at orientation in Washington, D.C. when she departs this month. “Following orientation I’ll fl y to Pachuca where school will have already started. I’m very excited.”

Today, “Our main focus, and it was always our mom’s and dad’s, is that we would only be selling American-made products,” he said. Big supporters of Local First, Larry said he and his team of brothers are populating the store with accessories, shelving, wall hangings and art from local artisans. “It’s one of the best groups I’ve ever joined,” he said.
