Ehrlich makes appearances around the Valley and continually tries to raise awareness for cats. “Cats need as much attention as dogs do when it comes to behavior,” Ehrlich said. “It’s late in coming.” Ehrlich has spent more than 25 years in the fi eld of feline behavior and said she is just doing what she loves. Gibbs said Ehrlich does an incredible job of observing cats. “I cannot recommend her highly enough,” Gibbs said. “She gets results and is a wonderful person.” Ehrlich can be found on the web at cattitude.vpweb.com. Cats Continued from page 21 arcadiadaily.com arcadiadaily.com Downtown center teaches Irish culture By Liam Hausmann A cottage the likes of which could be found in Ireland 100 years ago sits in the shadow of an eight-story hotel in downtown Phoenix. Inside, Valley residents of all ages can be found learning Irish language, dances and music. A sample of classes offered by the Arizona Irish Cultural Center’s Academy of Irish and Celtic Studies is Irish language, mandolin, Ceili dance (a type of Irish country dancing) and Bodhran, which is a traditional Irish drum. Mary Moriarty, operations manager for the center, teaches Ceili dance, and said she takes pride in keeping Irish culture alive and sharing the culture. “People like to know where they came from, and the Irish have a vibrant culture in music and dance,” Moriarty said. “People of Irish descent enjoy the fact that they can learn the same music and language that their ancestors were learning over 100 years ago.” Many classes at the cultural center, at the corner of Central Avenue and Portland Street, take place within a cottage that is a replica of rural Irish cottages of the 1850s. Patricia Prior, president of the board of trustees, said she takes pride in the artifacts on display there. “We have a replica of the Book of Kells that is as close to the real thing as you will see outside of Ireland,” Prior said. Known as the Leabhar Cheanannais in the Irish language, the Book of Kells is a manuscript of the four Gospels crafted by Celtic monks in 800 A.D. The cottage, which was completed and dedicated in March 2004, is a mirror image of the North Claire farmhouse in Bunratty Folk Park in Ireland. It contains genuine Irish lace curtains, samples of Irish craftwork including crystal glassware and china dishes, and other artisan pieces. Tours of the cottage and Great Hall are available during the week, and classes at the center are open to the public. Classes on Irish art and culture have been offered since 2002, when the center’s Great Hall was dedicated on St. Patrick’s Day. Classes usually have fewer than 10 pupils, with students ranging in age from 7 to 70- plus. Private lessons also are available. “Occasionally someone won’t be able to make it when the classes are offered, and we do try to accommodate for that when we can,” Moriarty said. “Everybody needs to be proud of their culture.” Sheila Maguire teaches traditional Irish violin, and she said the opportunity to pass on the culture is what brought her to the Irish Cultural Center in the fi rst place. “I just believe it’s important that the culture is continued,” she said. “I get to pass it on to all these new people in different age groups and different nationalities. Not everyone who comes through is Irish.” Moriarty said that one of the goals of the center is to educate people, Irish descent or not, and eliminate stereotypes. “There is more to the Irish culture than leprechauns, potatoes, and drinking,” she said. “We are storytellers, poets, and some of the greatest writers in the world have been Irish.” The center’s website is www.azirish.org.
