Despite changes, furniture store remains the same By Christia Gibbons The four sons of Joe and Fern James are keeping their parents’ dream of running a business alive. More than 50 years after opening, Larry, Mike, Jerry and Scott – ages 55 to 61 – are running Maple House Furniture at 28 th Street and Indian School Road. The elder James laid carpet after a stint in the U.S. Marines during WWII and moved his family from Illinois to Phoenix, eventually settling in Arcadia. At fi rst the shop was more like consignment, Larry said, and only the Early American stuff seemed to get bought, so mom urged the family to specialize in that type of furniture and sell it rather than work with consignment. “I think the reason the store was so successful is that a lot of people moved here from the East,” Mike said. “And that’s the furniture they either brought with them or wanted to have to feel like home.” Later, the store added Amish and Mission style furniture, which mixed well with the Early American look, Larry said. The boys all worked at the store as they were growing up, but Larry headed into real estate, Jerry moved to Texas and the electronics industry, Mike served in Vietnam and ran several businesses, with Scott the lone brother sticking with the family fi rm. Their father worked in the store seven days a week until his death last November. Fern died in 1999. The railroad rocker Joe preferred to sit in continues to hold a prominent spot in the store near the antique cash register still in use. “We de fi nitely have strengths and weaknesses,” Larry said of the brothers coming together. He pointed out that he is the sales and marketing guy; Jerry “is the master mathematician – he’s the keeper of the records;” Mike is keen on deliveries and sales and Scott is the idea guy. “He’s the one who never left the store,” Larry said. Growing up, the family lived three houses away from what now is the Squaw Peak Traditional Academy in the Creighton School District. Larry and Scott currently are roommates in their childhood home. When things went wrong in the neighborhood, Larry said, someone was bound to say: “It must be the James boys.” There was that spray-painting incident after two of the boys saw West Side Story, becoming enchanted at Sharks versus Jets. Dad had to pony up $300 to have some walls sand blasted.
