Perseverance, hard work and a twist of fate, however, helped the longtime Arcadia family man and business owner begin a successful business. Sage, founder of Dennis Sage Home Entertainment, said he had always hoped for a good lifestyle for his family, but it did not come easy. “That year was terrible,” Sage said. “It was the low point of my life.” Sage was later hired as a salesman for an audio and video business where he would eventually meet his wife of 19 years. In a Hollywood-type love story, one of Sage’s clients was Nancy Grubb, daughter of local car icon Lou Grubb. Going against company policy, Sage courted Grubb, and they fell in love. After they got married, Sage made a business plan for a home entertainment company and Lou Grubb liked the idea and helped Sage get the company started. Sage’s company does anything in entertainment, from low-end projects to one-of-a-kind custom homes. “We cover the whole gambit for any client,” Sage said. “Our goal is to enhance people’s lifestyles through technology.” Sage has passion for music and charity. He was a music major in college and worked at the Phoenix Symphony where he said he loved being around world class musicians playing some of the greatest music ever written, he said. Each stop has been an adventure and learning experience for Sage. “Everything has taught me a lot about being low and being on top,” Sage said. “Now with the economy the way it is, I’ve learned how to get back low and survive.” He recently fi nished a six-year term with Barrow Neurological Institute as a board member and chairman of the board helping raise money for St. Joseph’s Hospital. He also has been a part of the Lou Grubb charity golf tournament for 10 years in addition to spending time on several charitable boards for many years. His company had donated products and services to more than 30 charities. “I like repaying the people who have helped us to do well over the years,” Sage said. “Giving back is an important part of our business.” After nearly 30 years of raising four boys (now ages 17, 25, 26 and 30), Sage and his wife Nancy are about to be empty nesters. Although it is quite a change, Sage said he is ready. “It will be nice to be able to wake up and do what we want,” he said.
Page 33 August 2011 Fit Continued from page 31 Bill Warren and Mercedes Cimino post-race “All of it becomes possible.” Phoenix Fit organizer Mercedes Cimino, who has been a member for seven years, said she enjoys the park and canal training as not only a coaching opportunity, but also a social gathering. “Every single year people join who I genuinely consider my friends,” she said. “It’s so gratifying being at the fi nish line and seeing someone cross who you have been running with for six months. We all have shared dif fi culties and shared triumphs.” The six months of training begins this month. Cimino said the training consists of a marathon and half marathon schedule of running four times a week, three on one’s own during the week and once with the group on Saturday. “The No. 1 goal of training members is to train them how to be safe runners,” she said. “We have 15- to 20-minute seminars almost every Saturday that help members understand how to be safe when it comes to stretching, hydrating or selecting the proper running gear.” Dennis Erickson, a Phoenix Fit member who ran his fi rst marathon this past January, said Phoenix Fit, a subgroup of USA Fit, is a great support group for him physically and mentally. “I would not have been as successful or maybe even have failed if I had to do that by myself without support,” he said. “Running a marathon is a tough experience on top of me just turning 64.” Erickson said Cimino’s words before his race, “trust your training,” helped him set his own personal record, despite being mentally drained after the marathon. “The hardest thing about the marathon is not the physical it’s the mental,” he said. “As you go through the whole marathon you argue with yourself. It’s amazing some of the conversations you have going through your mind like, ‘Why are you doing this. What, are you an idiot?’ ” Erickson said even when you’re the slowest one, there’s always someone waiting for you at the fi nish line. “Knowing that you’re running with Phoenix Fit, after you fi nish a 10- or 15- mile run, you know ... there is someone there waiting for you to cheer you on,” he said. “You can’t ask for anything more than that.”
