SUSD awarded grant for early childhood The Scottsdale Uni fi ed School District’s Community Schools department has been awarded a $327,900 Pre-K Expansion & Collaboration Grant. The grant is supplied by the Arizona Department of Education’s Early Childhood Education section in collaboration with First Things First. This is the second year that SUSD has received the grant. “We are using the money for scholarships to our pre-Kindergarten programs at our Title I schools,” said Karen Hearn, director of SUSD Community Schools. This means students who attend part- time programs at Navajo, Pima and Tavan elementary schools “will have the opportunity and advantage to attend full- time programs.” Hearn said. The remainder of the grant monies will be used to fund full scholarships for the pre-Kindergarten program in district schools. According to the district, Hearn applied for the grant because many parents ask for fi nancial help to send their children to the pre-Kindergarten programs. SUSD will receive the grant monies in August and will have the opportunity to provide mentoring and ongoing training for teachers. First Things First was established to help provide greater opportunities for all children 5 and under in Arizona. First Things First is funded by a voter- approved tax on tobacco products. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona marathon series, Phoenix Fit is comprised of about 100 members, including four coaches and a few self-selected leaders who spend six months training the walkers, runners and advanced athletes. Registration is 6 a.m. Aug. 6 and Aug. 13 at Arcadia Park, 56 th Street and Indian School Road. Balog said although challenging, the ambiance of training at Arcadia Park and along the canal is a matchless experience. “The canal becomes a highway on weekends,” he said. “You have to be aware of the other runners, but the feel of the neighborhood and the area is beautiful.” Three marathons, eight half marathons and a few 10-kilometer races under his belt, Balog is entering his eighth season with Phoenix Fit. He said his transition from beginning as a non-runner to becoming an advanced runner was enlightening. “When you fi rst start it’s intimidating to think about running 10 miles, because that’s a long distance. That’s my commute to work,” he said. “After you complete that fi rst marathon, it puts into perspective everything that you think you can’t do. Continued on page 33
