Page 28 August 2011 Kelly spent last year’s Fourth of July weekend in Newport, and 2009’s holiday weekend in Coronado. His last trip to Mission Beach was about fi ve months ago, when he decided to take a short vacation from law school. It won’t be long until Kelly is back on Mission’s busy boardwalk again. Kelly just fi nished his fi rst year at Phoenix School of Law. He currently is taking a summer school course and researching for an attorney before school starts in the fall. Gordon, 62, completed a 100-mile bike ride around Lake Tahoe earlier this year as part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training (TNT). After being diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2009, Gordon joined TNT to help raise money for blood cancer research. Gordon, now in remission, said he knows that unless researchers fi nd a cure, he is not safe from the cancer. “For me, raising money for research on multiple myeloma is something that’s very much a real-time effort,” Gordon said. Multiple myeloma already had a dramatic effect on Gordon’s life. His fi rst wife, Sue, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 1997 and died 30 days later. Gordon had a stem-cell transplant, radiation, and chemotherapy at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, one of the nation’s leading facilities for his type of cancer. He was a runner when he was younger, but knee problems caused him to stop. Wanting her father to stay in shape, Elizabeth suggested cycling. Gordon acquiesced. Now, he said, he absolutely loves it. “Every time I get on the bike, I feel like a little boy again,” Gordon said. Cycling with TNT, Gordon said he gets to feel that nostalgia all the while raising money for a great cause. Gordon heard about his most recent ride, dubbed the America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride in Lake Tahoe, from one of his lawyer partners, Sam Coppersmith. Aftrer training, Gordon then went up to Tahoe with TNT and raised more than $19,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. TNT does a variety of events such as marathons, triathlons, and 100-mile bike rides. It is the largest fundraising campaign of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Gordon focuses on the cycling side of the program and will be riding in the Tour de Tucson later this year with TNT. “As long as I can stay in remission, hopefully somewhere along the line they will come up with a cure that will work for me and others,” Gordon said.
