CAMELBACK PLUMBING Famil Our Three fi lms to cool down the fi nal days of summer By Julie Demetros A Better Life Director: Chris Weitz Actors: Demián Bichir and José Julián A Better Life is a great portrayal of what life is like for some illegal immigrants. It makes the situation more personal than what we’ve already heard. Carlos (Bichir) is a gardener whose life’s goal is to help his son, Luis (Julián), become someone and make something of his life. He tries to set an example for Luis by being kind, patient and compassionate, but that’s not enough to stop Luis’ interest in the gangs that frequent his neighborhood. Though parts of the story are predictable, the ending isn’t and the story holds on all the way to the last line. The audience roots for Carlos as he struggles through the hardships of life and trying to have a good relationship with his son. At the same time, it takes longer to grow fond of Luis. At fi rst, it only matters what happens to him because it matters to his dad. Director Chris Weitz ( About a Boy, The Golden Compass and The Twilight Saga: New Moon ) picked a great cast, especially Bichir as the father, who’s been through so much but still remains hopeful that things will get better. One nice thing about the movie is that it skips the political parts and goes straight for the heart. It focuses on the emotional side of the story rather than showing the things we already see on the news. It’s not a romantic comedy about people who can’t decide if they hate or love each other and it’s not a quest to save the world full of epic battles between good and evil. And (drum roll please) it’s not in 3-D! But rather, it’s the story of a father and son who just need some time off from their busy lives to rediscover the bond they had long ago. A Better Life earns its 4 stars. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 Director: David Yates Actors: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson The end of the popular series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 is a good wrap-up to the story of the “Boy Who Lived.” Hunting down all the pieces of Lord Voldemort’s soul, aka Horcruxes, and destroying them is the only way to kill the Dark Lord for good and Harry (Radcliffe), Hermione (Watson) and Ron (Grint) are set on accomplishing it. Harry’s new quest is to get back to Hogwarts, as he believes there’s a Horcrux hidden there. But when he gets there, a bigger battle approaches as Voldemort orders an attack on the school Harry once called “home.” At fi rst glance it may seem like a bad thing that the last book in the Harry Potter series was broken into two movies, making the viewers pay twice to see the whole thing. However, it also makes room for both movies to be more accurate to the book. Of course, making two movies instead of one also makes room for more scenes full of teens making out, which obviously couldn’t be excluded. For if they were left out, what would be the point in seeing the movie? How about the epic battles, the sweet and saddening fl ashbacks, and the depressing deaths of some of our favorite characters as well as the revelation of some secrets we knew nothing about before? Page 21 August 2011 By Daniel Kemp In a world of dog lovers, dog clichés and dog royalty contests, Jane Ehrlich attempts to even the playing fi eld. Ehrlich is a feline behavior counselor, speci fi cally an expert on dealing with cat problems ranging from scratching to urinating outside the litter box. “I think the world of Jane and she is such a great soul,” said Trina Gibbs, an Arcadia resident and client. Gibbs said her cat was spraying on the door and she was at her wits end. She called up Ehrlich, who diagnosed the problem and quickly fi xed the situation. Whenever Gibbs has a problem she simply calls or emails the cat behaviorist, who is very helpful, she said. “She’s not in the business to make tons of money,” Gibbs said. “She genuinely cares about cats, and I cannot thank her enough for helping me out. “It wasn’t like ‘call me and that’ll be $50.’ She is just one of the most helpful, nice people I’ve ever met.” Ehrlich’s studied ethology (animal behavior) at Washington University in St. Louis and worked for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for 18 years in London. Ehrlich explained that although cats don’t think like humans, people try to correlate motives to what a human may think, and it doesn’t work that way.
